Notes for PATRICK HEENAN:
Mygreat, great grandfather, Patrick Heenan was born in the town land called Oldcourt circa 1803.Oldcourt is located within Terryglass Parish, in the Northwest corner of Tipperary.According to land survey maps of 1901, Oldcourt, is located just above the new Terryglass Church, 7 miles south ofPortumna, Co. Galway along the Shannon. It sits on the Lough Derg and River Shannon and includes a total landmass of 162 acres.Oldcourt itself dates back prior to the Norman times. The oldest castle still standing is called "Old Court castle".It is said that this area was the "head of the Norman Manor".The castle was the stronghold for the parish and looks down upon the Lough Derg and the River Shannon.Today, the castle is in private ownership.
Patrick was known to have had at least five brothers and sisters including John, Ann, Rodger, Brigid (Biddy), and Judy.According to the Hibernian Research Company (HRC), all farms were assessed annually, by the Imperial Standard Measure of Surface, in order to accurately tax landowners. This method of taxing was a ritual brought into Ireland during the Viking invasions and continued through this time.Through searching these records it was discovered that in 1824, Patrick Heenan was the owner of a significant piece of property in Terryglass Parish. This land was called Shanavagawn or Shannonview and stretched across 32 acres and 3 roods. At that time, the taxes on this property cost Patrick £4, 7 shillings and 4 pence annually.Patrick’s brother, John Heenan owned the adjacent farm property in Oldcourt, which too was a significant portion of land within Terryglass Parish. In the 1824 assessment of surface of Patrick's brother John’s property, measured 17 acres, 2 roods, and 10 perches. The taxes on his property were£1, 16 shillings, and 3 pence.
Around 1840 Patrick moved within the Terryglass Parish to the area known as Cornamult. Before moving to Cornamult, Patrick married a woman by the name of Margaret Meara (O'Meara) on February 18, 1833.Patrick and Margaret Heenan (née Meara) had ten children including John, Rodger, Margaret, Judy, Patrick, Thomas, Michael, James, William, and Timothy.
