In 1651 he received a land grant at New London.
In 1660 he gave his daughter, Dorcas, who married Peter Mills, 20 acres of his Greenfield land to build upon.
Edwards name appears on the 1669 Windsor list of those having a family and a horse.
"The Paternal Lineage and Some of the Descendants of Isaac Messenger of Connecticut" by Anne Farrell (Higgins) Wood (1964) contains the following:
"EDWARD MESSENGER, son of Sarah and Andrew Messenger, Sr., was born in England in 1617. He and his brothers came to Massachusetts with their parents. In 1650 Edward was living in Hartford, Conn., in the Windsor settlement, with three children. It is recorded that the court once sentenced Edward to be whipped for merciless treatment of a servant, then lying to extenuate his fault.
Edward Messenger was one the first settlers of the Colony of Connecticut. He located at Windsor where a fort was soon ager built, and a fur trade with the Indians sprang up. In 1621 and for many years after, all the settlers for New England landed in the Colony of New Plymouth or Massachusetts and emigrated from thence to Connecticut. For several years after 1635 there were no settlements by the English in Connecticut except in the towns of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield and a few in Saybrook. Edward Messenger had land in 1650 at Greensfield (now Bloomfield), Conn. He gave to his daughter Dorcas, who married Peter Mills the Dutchman, 20 acres of his Greenfield land (1660) to build upon. In the list of those having a family and a horse at Windsor in 1669, the name of Edward Messenger appears and he was a Grantee at New London in 1651....
The Memorial History of Hartford, Conn. states that 'There was probably a period of fifty or sixty years during which Windsor, Conn. was the political, religious and social center of the little colony, in the southwest part of Windsor known by the name of "Messenger Farms". However, it was a long way to go to church and very difficult in winter, with snow three feet deep, or more, from November to March. They even had to go to Windsor to "get fire" whey they were so unfortunate as to be out of it in those days before friction matches. So there zealous people, in May 1734, petitioned for "winter privileges" and were granted liberty to conduct a separate worship from November to March. Two years later they were made independent of the Windsor church."
"The Messenger Family in the Colony of Connecticut" by Nettie Wright Adams (1963) contains the following:
"Edward Messenger, son of Andrew Messenger and Sarah Messenger, born in England in 1617. Stiles's 'Windsor' appears to give about all the information available about Edward Messenger. He lived in the Windsor settlement in 1650 and was a married man. In 1650, he owned land in what is now Bloomfield, Connecticut. In 1660 he gave his daughter Dorcas Messenger twenty acres of land to build upon. Edward Messenger was once sentenced by the court to be whipped for his merciless treatment of a servant and then lying to lessen his fault. There may have been other children in the Edward Messenger family, but there are records of but three [Dorcas, Nathaniel, and Deliverance]."
"The Connecticut Nutmegger" magazine of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists (Sept. 1983) lists Edward Messenger as one of the Ancestral Heads of Windsor's First Families.
Edwin Stanley Welles's Births, Marriages, and Deaths Returned from Hartford, Windsor, and Farifield" (Hartford, 1898) includes mention in the record that Edward Messenger had three children (as listed).
The following are references to Edward Messenger from Henry R. Stiles "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor" (Hartford, 1891), Vol. I:
p. 88 -- On the 1675 tax list "Ed. Messenger" appears among those Windsor residents who have a "Family and horse".
p. 93 -- On Dec. 2, 1652 Edward was sentenced "for his unmercifulness towards his servant and lying to extenuate his fault, to be severely whipped when he shall be called forth by the Governor."
p. 161 -- On the chapter about the First Settlers and Their Home-Lots it is mentioned by Stiles that Edward Messenger, in 1650, was a resident of Greenfield (new Bloomfield).
p. 882 -- Here appears a list of the number of children born to each household up to Aug. 17, 1677. On this is listed that Edward Messenger has had 3 children born in Windsor.
Jay Mack Holbrook's "Connecticut Colonists: Windsor 1635-1703" (Oxford, MA, 1986) contains an interesting entry. On p. 183, it mentions the birth of a child named Edward Messenger on Dec. 20, 1655, but the father's name is given as John Hakes. I have no idea what this means.

"Mark Kelsey was the son of William Kelsey and Bethia Hopkins. William Kelsey was b. in England about 1600 and died in 1680. Stiles, vol. 2, p. 422, states that William Kelsey came to the colony at Hartford in 1639. The Kelsey Genealogy states in vol. 1, p. 38 that William Kelsey died at Killingworth and was probably buried there.
He married about 1625-8 in England Bethia Hopkins, b. about 1605-10 in Eng. and who died about 1636.
William Kelsey mar. again shortly after the death of Bethia and his four younger are thought to be by his second wife. William's children by Bethia were: Mark, b. ca 1628; Bethia, b. ca 1630; Priscilla, Mary, John.
By William's second wife there were Abigail, Stephen, Daniel, and William Jr.
Stiles names only four of the children of William Kelsey -- William, Mark, Thomas and Stephen.
Mark Kelsey, b. about 1628, son of William and Bethia (Hopkins) Kelsey, lived in Windsor and Wethersfield. He mar. 8 Mar., 1658 at Windsor Rebecca Hoskins, b. about 1634 and who died 28 Aug., 1782, dau. of John Hoskins and his wife Ann Filer. Mark mar. 2nd Abigail Atwood on Dec. 26, 1683. Mark Kelsey died 27 Feb., 1722/3, probably in Windsor. His children by Rebecca Hoskins were: (1) Rebecca, b. Jan. 2, 1659, and (2) John, who died Jan. 18, 1685."
"A Genealogy of the Descendants of William Kelsey" by Chester C. Kelsey (1928) contains this information about Mark Kelsey:
"MARK KELSEY was probably the eldest child of William and Bethia Kelsey and born about 1628, probably in England. He lived in Windsor and Wethersfield; died before Feb. 27, 1722/23, probably at Windsor. Married first, March 8, 1659, at Windsor, REBECCA HOSKINS, born about 1643; died Aug. 28, 1683, daughter of John Hoskins and his wife Ann Filer. (John Hoskins came to New England in the 'Mary and John' in 1630; was deputy to the General Court in 1637 and died May 3, 1648. his wife died Mar. 6, 1662.) Mark Kelsey married second, Dec. 26, 1683, probably at Wethersfield, Mrs. ABIGAIL (______) ATWOOD, born about 1645-1648; died Mar. 28, 1713, widow of Capt. Thomas Atwood of Wethersfield.
Children: 8 (?), five sons and two daughters of whom records can be found, and one other, sex unknown. All born probably at Windsor...
The records relating to Mark are very meagre. We have nothing to prove his place of birth nor the date, nor even that he was the son of William, but as there was no other Kelsey family among the first settlers of Hartford, and as he was apprently too young to have been William's brother, we assume that he was a son, and in all probability the eldest child, probably born in England about 1628 before his parents came to Cambridge, Mass. Savage calls Mark Kelsey 'off Windsor', which is verified by the history of the town of Windsor, but in a mortgage of land in Wethersfield, Feb. 27, 1664/5, mark calls himself 'of Wethersfield', and his second wife, Mrs. Abigail Atwood, was of Wethersfield. In the 'Hartford Probate Records' we find the following: Vol. I, p. 300, Mark Kelsey one of those appointed to take Inventory of the Estate of James Eggleston, of Windsor, Dec. 24, 1679; Vol. III, p. 7, Land that had belonged to Mark Kelsey disposed of in the Will of Lieut. Josiah Barbour, of Windsor, will dated April 1, 1726.
We know from the marriage records that Mark was married twice, and as Adams states above, he was supposed to have had eight children, but we have records of only seven, probably only six, as it is not certain that Joseph, listed here as the sixth child, was a son of Mark, and we have birth records only of Rebecca and Thomas. The statement made by Adams in 'Middletown Upper Houses' that Ezekiel Kelsey of Wethersfield was the sixth child of Mark is an error; this Ezekiel having been the son of John and Mary Buck. Mark may have had an eighth child, who possibly died young, by his second wife.
The place and date of death of Mark are not recorded. On May 2, 1715, his daughter-in-law, Abigail Watson, widow of his son William, allows Mark a sum of money for 'bringing up 2 children', the daughters of the said William, and on Feb. 27, 1722/3, Obadiah Spencer, Jr., in his will, mentions 'my wife's father, Mark Kelsey, deceased.' So that Mark died between May 2, 1715 and Feb. 27, 1722/3, but we have found no more specific date than this.
The second wife of Mark was Abigail, widow of Capt. Thomas Atwood, of Wethersfield. By her first husband, she had children: Abigail, born 1668, married George Killborn in 1689; Andrew, born 1671; Jonathan, born 1675; Josiah, born 1678. Capt. Atwood died intestate in 1682, inventory of his estate being taken by John Killborn, Senior, and the widow, Abigail, Oct. 24, 1682; the heirs named as the widow, Abigail; children, Abigail, 14; Andrew, 11; Jonathan, 7; Josiah, 4. Administration granted to the widow, Dec. 13, 1682."
The following are references to Mark Kelsey from Henry R. Stiles "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor" (Hartford, 1891), Vol. I:
p. 88 -- On the 1675 tax list there is, among those listed as having a "Family, a horse, and two oxen", is a "Mich. Kelsey". [This would seemingly be someone named Michael Kelsey, but Mark had no brother known by that name. It is possible this should be a reference to Mark.]
p. 207 -- Mark Kelsey signed his named to a complaint by the men of the New church in Windsor in the winter of 1673 to the Old Church. There was growing friction between the two congregations, and Mark sided with the New Church.
In "Some Early Records and Documents of and Relating to the Town of Windsor, Connecticut, 1693-1703" by the Conn. Hist. Society (Hartford, 1930) Mark Kelsie appears on an 1686 list of persons and estate ratable as having 2 "pfones" ratable at 36 and 00; 4 acres of meadow and 13 upland acres ratable at 21 and 00; 2 oxen, 3 cow (1 of 3 years, 3 of 1 year), 2 horses and 4 swine ratable at 40 and 00; all totaling a ratable estate of 97 and 00.
