OBITUARY--Mt. Pleasant News, December 5, 2003
Ellen Anna Baker, 81, of Winfield, formerly of Richland, died Wed. Dec. 3, 2003, at Sunshine Terrace Care Center in Winfield where she had been a resident for seven years.
She was born February 13, 1922, in Conesville, the daughter of John and Hazel Brent Buser. She grew up in the Conesville area graduating from Conesville High School in 1939.
She was united in marriage to Lawrence Melvin "Bud" Baker on April 9, 1941, at the parsonage of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Washington. The couple spent most of their lives in the Washington area moving to Fairfield in 1964, and later moving to Richland. She worked at the Hy-Vee Food Store in Washington and in Fairfield for 20 years.
Before moving to Sunrise Terrace, she was an active member of the Prairie View United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, 4H Club and was active with her husband in the Richland Lions Club. She and her husband showed ponies after their retirement, participating in the Iowa State Fair for several years. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Beverly E. Coffland of Blairstown; Roberta A. Oswalt of Richland; and M. Catherine Lauderdale of Winfield; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; 10 great-grandchildren, one step great-grandson; one sister, Betty Mason of Richland, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Larry Eugene; four brothers, John,, Grant, Henry and Robert; and two sisters, Hazel Swabenlander and Lela Rohde.
Funeral services were held Sat., Dec. 6 at the United Methodist Church in Richland with the Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington. visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 5th from 6 to 7:30 P.M. at the Gould Funeral Home in Richland.
A memorial has been established at the Richland Public Library or Sunrise Terrace Care Center Eden Alternative Initiative.
The Gould Funeral Home in Richland were in charge of the arrangements.
