The bearer, Mr Drumgoole, being here last summer, was instructed with sundry presents from the States & from myself to the principal Indians of the Cherokee Nation, which, as appears by the answers he has now brought to our letters, he faithfully delivered and he interpreted and explained our letters much to the satisfaction of the People. I therefore take leave to mention him to you as a person who from his knowledge of the language & custom of those people, is capable of being usefull to the interests of the United States in those parts, if employed under the superintendants as an agent for Indian affairs. I am informed he is a man of property, and has a good character for [Probity & Zeal] for the public good. As such I recommend him to your [Notice] and good counsels, and am, with great esteem,
Your most obediant
& most humble servant
B Franklin

Notes for NANCY AUGUSTA:
An account of the Church at Candy's Creek, Cherokee Nation, 1 Jan 1828;
Nancy Field, the aged, having never been able to understand a word of English has thus not received so much light and instruction as others; and it is painful to state that owing partly to this & partly to prejudice arising from a long life of heathenistic practice, her christian [health] has not been of that uniform [unreadable] character which we had hoped to behold.Yet we entertain the belief that she is a true believer and (now more than ever before) established in the faith of the gospel.The practice of conjuring and more especially a belief in the [effi- cicy and inoiscency] of the art have constituted the "right head" in her case which has at length been dropped off.She is rarely able to attend meetings from the distance of a half mile: yet whenever her frail nature will permit she is very punctual in her attendance.
The Presbyterian Missionary at Candy's Creek, William Holland, dubbed her "Nancy Augusta".
