Letter from John A Watie to Stand Watie
Honey Creek, May 10th, 1846
Dear Stand....
An unprovoked murder was committed day before yesterday on Jack Elliot at his residence on Grand river.Arch and Jack [Jr] came up yesterday Evening bringing the news &c.
They stated that they & their father were working in the field until near about sunset; when they left to go to the house they were fired on by someone concealed in the bushes, one of the shots hitting the old man which caused his death almost instantly, another shot came very near hitting Arch which went through his horses head; the boys discovered three men making their way off. They were three Cherokees, -foot men- they were tracked to Saline Creek some 8 or 9 miles from where Elliott lived.
Mr Elliott was with us several days in our fort. When he left he said he would return in one week he and his boys.
I have no doubt in my mind that his being with us and opposed to John Ross measures was the cause of his death for he was a man who spoke his thoughts tolerable loud in any crowd.
I understood Arch & Jack [Jr] to say that their sister Mrs. Sprinston said that Sprinston told her that he intended to have all the men who had been in the fort killed off.
You know Mrs. Sprinston was daughter of Jack Elliot.
