Notes for WILLIAM SHOREY, SR:
He served the British for a time as an interpreter at Fort Loudoun and, because of his fluency in the Cherokee language, accompanied Lieutenant Henry Timberlake and a group of Cherokees to England.During the crossing in May of 1762, Shorey either died of a consumption [pneumonia?] or poisoning (sources differ).A print showing the interpreter and three Indians in the delegation is at Colonial Williamsburg, VA.This print is made from a black & white engraving and is one of only two copies available. The other print is in England.According to "The Memoirs of Lieut Henry Timberlake", London, 1765; describing the circumstances of William Shorey's death, the account reads, " We had the misfortune here to lose the interpreter Shorey, who was much regretted by us all, but especially by the Indians, as he was a thorough master of their language. He had lingered some time in a consumption, caught in passing a small river, for, being drunk, his Indian spouse plunged him in to sober him, but was unable to draw him out, and had not some Indians come to her assistance he must have been drowned. This was an effectual means of sobering him, but by it he contracted the malady that carried him off."
