Edward was the fourth Child of Isabella Riddle and William Miles.He was 5ft 11in tall, with fair complexion, light hair and grey eyes, and he lived in Plain Grove Township most of his life.For awhile when he was young he worked in his fathers sawmill and later he learned the carpenters trade."In the Civil War in 1861", Edward was one of the first to volunteer in the Washington Guards.After three years in the guard and in Company E, 100th Pennsylvania Volunteers [Roundheads], he re- enlisted.During his service he was wounded three times:at Bill Run, August29 1862, when he was Struck by a minnie ball, which imbedded itself in a pocket bible he carried in his shirt pocket; on July 30 1864, when he was struck by shrapnel, wounding his side; and in a battle at Petersburg, March7 1865, when a minnie ball went through both legs above the knees.He was hospitalized until his discharge on July 25th 1865.He and Rebecca were married by theRev. Robert B. Walker.They lived in Big Beaver Township and attended Wampum Presbyterian Church.Edward was ill for 8 months before his death, and Rebecca died ten weeks later.
