Harry Hook (b. May 28, 1861, d. June 2, 1909)

Harry Hook (son of Eli Wheeler and Ellen Hook) was born May 28, 1861 in Mother Ellen Hook, and died June 2, 1909 in Found in Deptford Canal.He married Martha Bones on March 20, 1886 in Beckenham Kent, daughter of Thomas Bones and Martha Wheeler.

From a Report in The Kentish Mercury Friday 4 June 1909- Supposed suicide of a Deptford Publican.
On Wednesday Morning (TUES) was served with a summons allowing premises to be used for betting purposes. Greenwich Police Court.
Proceedings pending against Mrs Hook and potman as well as two frequent customers of the house ajourn proceedings for two months..
Harry was found drowned in the Deptford Canal on the Wednesday 3rd.. When I went to a spiritualist Meeting in London was told that he had had a heart attack - not surprising considering the events.His Grandsons Phillip McGoldrick and Lenard Hook both died of Heart Attacks. He was born illegitimate in Pembury Workhouse - Now Pembury Hospital. His mother Ellen married Eli Wheeler and he lived with them till he left to work with Ellens brother Robert in a Coffee- house in Deptford. Was still known as Wheeler until he got married and then reverted to Hook. He loved horses and often took my father as a boy by pony and trap to 'The Wells' to see his relations. My Father never tired of the journey.
In Brockley Cemetery there is a plot Z 263 for Harry Hook. Not certain if this is for this Harry or his Grandchild Harry that died aged 4 years with Scarlet Fever.
