Jasper was the first child and first son of Charles Hopper of North Carolina. He was 100 years old at death. He went over the Great Smokey Mountains to Tennessee and brought home his bride Nancy Mullins, a Native of Tennessee. They had 8 Children.
Jasper and his family moved by easy stages through Ohio, Indiana,Illinois and Missouri, where Nancy died.
Though Jasper was 77 years old when the gold rush started, he immediately set out for California And became one of the Forty-Niners, He settled at Napa, California where he died 23 years later.
Many tales were told of his vitality and enthusiasm for hunting.Ida Hopper Cox of
Hearoldsburg, California told the following:
Uncle Jasper used to go out to my Father's(David Hopper] ranch in the mountains, above Skaggs Springs, and hunt bear with him, Uncle Charles used to hunt with him a lot Too.
One time in 1860, Uncle Jasper went out on a bear land and my father put him on a stand, as we call it and pa put the dogs in the brush and they ran out 3 Big Grizzlies.Uncle Jasper was behind a big redwood log and just laid low until they passed. When my father came he said, "Why didn't you shoot?" jasper said "Why Dave that was the ugliest sight I ever saw in my life, and if you run out one at a time, I'll take a shot"So pa started the hounds again and they ran out one of the big fellows and Uncle Jasper killed him.He was just chucked full of mischief and used to play awful pranks.
