Notes for Thomas B. Horn:
These notes are an abriged version of an extended discussion, which can be found in C:FTWDocsThosBHornDisc.rtf
Thomas V. Horn of Valparaiso, Indiana initially called my attention to the line of descendants of a certain Thomas B. Horn who died in Sumner county, TN, apparently not many years after relocating there from North Carloina.Recently I have received a similar listing of descendants of this Thomas B. Horn from Catherine Mitchell Rochelle, another of his descendants.
Excerpts from this message of 27 Apr 98 provide some of the earlier data I received from Thomas V. Horn:
" As for the information on what I know of my line, as I stated
earlier, Thomas B. Horn is listed in Sumner Co. records in 1818, 1819 as
owning 93 acres in Station Camp Creek. He had a wife named Charity (maiden
unknown). I believe that Thomas B. passed away in 1820 due to the sale of
his estate was made in May of 1820. Thomas B. passed away before his son
Thomas P. was born since Thomas P. was born August 9, 1820. Charity Horn is
listed as the head of household in the 1830 and 1840 census. Also in the
records, it mentions of an Etheldred P. Horn (see * below) who lived in the Kings
Branch section of Sumner Co., but I have not been able to connect the two thus far.
Additionally, I have found a Joab Horn who married a Penianah Daughtry on
21-27-1842. Thomas P. Horn married Nancy Ann Perry on 12-18-1842. I
believe Joab and Thomas to be related but again, no definitive proof as of
yet. Thomas went on to have 5 children, William (1845), Thomas B. (1847),
Charity E. (1850), Issac N. (1854), James Richard Horn (my g-g-grandfather,
Feb. 28, 1852), and John A. Horn (1856). Thomas P. passed away on July 18,
1857. His wife Nancy Ann went on to marry Mosely Stratton. As I stated
earlier, as of this time, the only link I have to Thomas B. Horn to North
Carolina is in the Sumner Co., Inventories, Settlements, and Guardian
Accounts (1808-1821) which lists him going to N.C. to bring back three
negroes and the settlement account of Penelope D. Horn who was an orphan.
I will be visiting Sumner Co. next week for some in depth research on
the Horn family and HOPEFULLY, I will be able to obtain more information.
If I do, I will be sure to contact you to see if there are any connections.
As for me, I am 36 years old and I am a Patrol Sergeant with the Valparaiso
Police Dept. Valparaiso is located in NW Indiana about 45 miles SE of
Chicago. I am married with two sons (Thomas Jr. 6, and Jacob 2). Thanks
again for the information, I please keep in touch. Good luck in your search.

* ( The Ethelred Horn listed above is the son of Joel Horn (son of Henry "the Quaker" Hornand brother of "Col" William Horn)and Sarah Philips)
Additional correspondence from Thomas V. Horn, eMail of 4/27/98 forwarded to me by Bill Horn of Garland, TX, includes the following information assembled by T. V. Horn:
"In the Abstracts of Wills, Edgecombe Co, NC, 1733-1856, it lists several times a THOMAS B. HORN.First mentioned as sharing a bond of $3000 under a will of ELIJAH HORN in 1815.It also lists him as an Extr, in the will of MICHAEL HORN.I am attempting to find out if this Thomas B. Horn is the same one who moved to Sumner Co TN.In the Sumner Co TN Inventories, Settlements, and Guardain Accounts, Vol A, March 1808 to February 1821, it lists:Settlement with guardian of PENELOPE D. HORN, orphan, by THOMAS B. HORN, Gdn, for 1818 and 1819.Guardian bond in North Carolina, $.60, 1818.Guardiabn bond in Sumner Co TN $.75, 1818. "Expenses of going to North Carolina and bringing three negroes to Tennessee (46 days).
The identification of individuals named in the above paragraph and the attempted characterization of their relationship to Thomas B. Horn of Sumner County, TN is the subject of the remainer of this discussion:
A Thomas B. Horn is mentioned in the will of Elijah Horn of Edgecombe County NC, b abt 1740, d abt 1814, will written Mar, 1804, and probated in Feb Court, 1815.For several reasons to be discussed below, it seems likely that exploration of the relationship of Thomas B. to this Elijah Horn may be the most likely available key to determining Thomas B.'s parentage and origin.
A Thomas B. Horn is named as executor of the Edgecomb County will of Michael Horn, probated in the November court, 1814.This Michael Horn, apparently unmarried and childless at his death, was the son of Michael Horn and grandson of the well establish patriarch, William Horn,1690-1754, from Nansemond County Virginia and Edgecombe County, NC.Little is known to me of this Michael Horn, and the specific nature of his relationship to Thomas B. Horn, which led him to appoint this man his executor, is now unknown.(It is known that Michael Horn, the father, born about 1724, owned property along the Tyancokey Swamp, portions of which he sold to Elijah in 1763 and 1766 (cited by Edna Raiter).)
The relationship which led to the appointment of Thomas B. Horn as the guardian of Penelope D. Horn is probably enmeshed in the relationship of Thomas B. Horn to Elijah Horn and Elijah's neighbors, the Deaver family.
Edna Raiter of Raleigh NC, a descendant of Elijah Horn, and a keen student of the Horn Families of NC has prepared an excellent discussion of the Horn Line, made available to me by Bill Horn of Garland, TX, another Elijah Horn descendant. Raiter's extended discussion of Elijah Horn, Sr., including the full text of his will,is in this FTW file, in the Notes to Elijah Horn (1740-1815).
Before we attempt to solve the relationship between Thomas B. Horn and the family of Elijah Horn, Sr., we need to assemble additional information about Thomas B.
I received the following update from Thomas V. Horn by eMail, 10/26/98:
Greetings again Dr. Horn,
Here is the current information I have on Thomas B. Horn and his decsendents:
Thomas B. Horn (b. abt. 1770, d. 1820 Sumner Co., TN)
+Married #1 Penelope Deaver (widow of Thomas Deaver of Edgecombe Co.)
They had one child, Penelope D. Horn (b. 05-09-1812, d.04-27-1819)
+Married #2 Charity Perry (b. abt. 1790, d. 01-21-1831), widow of James Perry
They had three children:
Mary Charity Horn (b. 06-11-1816, d. 10-09-1816)
William King Horn (b.11-23-1818, d. in infancy)
Thomas P. Horn (b. 08-09-1820, d. 07-19-1857)
It has been tradition to name the first born son after the grandfather and
the first born daughter after the mother. I am now looking that a William
Horn might be the father of Thomas B. Horn. It is believed that Thomas B.
came to Sumner Co. TN between 1817-1919. He is somehow related to Elijah
Horn (mentioned in his will as providing a $3,000 security bond) and was
also guardian to Elijah's son, Byhtal Horn, children Whitmel, Duke, and
Harriet Horn.
Thomas P. Horn (b. 08-08-1820, d. 07-19-1857)
+Married Nancy Ann Perry (b. abt. 1826. d. abt. 1908) on 12-18-1844 and
had 6 children:
William P. Horn (b. abt. 1845, d. ?)
Thomas Bryant Horn (b. Jan 17, 1847)
Charity Elizabeth Horn (b. abt. 1850, d. Oct. 17, 1916)
Issac N. Horn (b. abt. 1853, d.?)
James Richard Horn (b. 02-28-1852, d. June 22, 1941)
John Horn (b. 06-26-1865, d. 03-28-1858)
Thomas P. Horn lived all of his life in Sumner Co. as did his children. I
decsend through James Richard Horn who had one son, Charles Thomas Horn.
Charles T. Horn had two sons, James Thomas Horn and Pat Wilson Horn all of
Sumner Co. James Thomas Horn had one son, Thomas V. Horn and I have two
sons, Thomas V. Horn Jr. and Jacob Gerald Horn.
That is about all of the information I have at this time. Hopefully, in
working with Catherine Rochell, together, we can link Thomas B. to the rest
of the Horns of Edgecombe Co. which can tie us in to William Horn of
Nansemond Co., VA. Thanks again for your help Dr. Horn. I hope to make it
down to the Gallatin area again next year for some more research. I was
able to visit the Tennessee State Archives earlier this year and found a
wealth of information. Take care and please keep in touch.

12 December, 1998
Hello, Thomas V. Horn and Catherine Rochelle,
Merry Christmas,
For the last month or six weeks I have been studying my records and some additional material which I have located at the Tenn State Library and Archives, in regard to the questions of the ancestry of your Thomas B. Horn of Sumner County, TN.
I believe I have figured it out !!!!!One can probably never be sure about this type of conclusion, but I believe I have assembled enough associations and connections, based on the information which you have supplied, with other records available, that I am almost certain I know how Thomas B. Horn fits into the descendants of William Horn of Nansemond and many of the other early Horn's of NC in the 1700's.
It is complex to present all the justification for the conclusion in one digestible lump, so I will try to start with the conclusions, and perhaps leave most of the corroboration to you and Catherine.I do not want to prejudice you too much or spoil the fun for you. And, of course, I could be wrong, but I doubt it, about this, anyway.
Factoid One:
Joel Horn, born about 1751, son of Moses Horn (abt 1719 -1782) and grandson of William Horn "of Nansemond" (abt 1690 - 1754), died in 1785, leaving his wife Ann and six minor children, Mary, Elijah, Margret, Chloe, Thomas, and Penelope.See Joel's will and read the original - there are serious errors in at least two of the widely quoted published abstracts of this will - and these errors have confused and confounded good people.
(Another caution: this above Joel Horn, son of Moses, had a first cousin, Joel Horn, son of Henry "the Quaker" Horn, born about the same time and, fearfully enough, also married to a woman named Ann.The latter Joel died in 1793.Both of these Joel's lived in the same vicinity and both are named in numerous real estate transactions during their fairly brief adulthoods. When you see a Joel Horn mentioned in this period, consider which one it is.In the real estate transactions you can frequently infer which Joel it is by the names of witnesses, etc, who are commonly brothers or other close relatives of one or the other.)
Factoid Two:
Elijah Horn (Abt 1740 - 1814) of Edgecombe County, NC, left a great will, naming his second wife, Susanna (Bullock Killebrew) and "her son, Henry", and his children, Simeon, James, Willie, Bythal, Rhoda (Ward), Selah (Dew), Levi, and Michael, all children by his first wife, name unknown.(There may have been another child born to Susanna after the will was written (written ten years before he died).
Unfortunately, Elijah above did not name his parents in his will.I believe it is likely, but unproven and possibly unprovable, that this Elijah Horn (1740 - 1814) is the grandson of William of Nansemond (1690 -1754) and the son of William Horn, Jr (1713 - 1795), based on suggestive but not absolutely convincing real estate records linking them.(Even more unfortunately, some otherwise good and credible students of the Horn genealogy have grievously erroneously concluded that this Elijah, lately coupled with Susanna, etc.,was the same person as the Elijah, son of our little Joel Horn, son of Moses. This Joel was clearly younger than the Elijah born in 1740, and therefore was not his father!!!Furthermore, both Joel's older cousin Elijah and the young Elijah, Joel's son, are named in a very significant court proceeding in 1787, clearly discriminating the two of them (See Below).
Both Joel Horn (1751 - 1785) and, his older first cousin, Elijah Horn, Sr (1740 - 1814) owned property and undoubtedly resided a few miles east of present day Rocky Mount, NC, south of the Tar River, Joel in the Buck Swamp area and Elijah Sr near the Tyancokey Swamp, now called "Cokey Swamp".Elijah's property and plantation borders that of a certain Thomas Deaver and family.
Joel died in 1785, after a short illness (see Will dates).I have obtained from a very reliable source a recent letter from Edna Raiter of Raleigh NC containing the following statement: "I visited the NC Genealogy Room this morning to get a complete wording of Elijah's appointment as guardian of Joel's children. This is from the "Edgecomb County Abstracts of Court Minutes, 1757-1794: Thursday, April 26 1787:Elijah Horn is appointed quardian to Mary, Elijah, Margaret, Chloe, Thomas and Penelope Horn, orphans of Joel Horn, deceased."This court record clearly documents that one Elijah, Joel's cousin and the executor of Joel's will, was named guardian of a second Elijah, Joel's orphaned son.
One of Joel's orphaned children is named "Thomas".Keep that in mind!
Thomas Deaver, neighbor of Elijah Horn, Sr, dies in 1805, leaving to his widow, Penelope, possibly pregnant, the plantation and $700 silver dollars "to raise and build the house already begun".Within a few years thereafter, the widow Penelope Deaver, marries a "Thomas B. Horn".It is, ofcourse, my speculation, that Thomas, the orphaned son of Joel, who had been under the guardianship of Elijah Sr., married the relatively wealthy widow of Elijah's neighbor.
I further speculate that, because of the likely particularly close relationship of Thomas to his surrogate father, Elijah, after Elijah died in 1814 and his son Bythal died in 1815, it was proper and in character for Thomas, now relatively well off, to fulfill the debt he owed Elijah by assuming the guardianship of Bythal's orphaned children, Whitmel, Harriet, and Marmaduke William.(It is of interest to note that the parents of Bythal's widow, Tabitha Barnes Horn, Williamson Barnes (d 1814) and Patience Barnes (d 1818) left most or all of their estate to Tabitha's three children.)
The rest of the story includes the birth of the child, Penelope D. Horn to Thomas and Penelope in 1812, the death of Thomas's wife, Penelope, soon thereafter, his second marriage, to Charity Perry in about 1815, and their apparent decision to relocate to Sumner County, Tennessee, between 1817 -1819.I further speculate that Thomas B. Horn and his second wife, Charity, may have left Penelope D. Horn behind in NC, when they left for Tennessee, as the citation in Sumner Court record noted by Thomas V. Horn may suggest (See Above: In the Sumner Co TN Inventories, Settlements, and Guardain Accounts, Vol A, March 1808 to February 1821, it lists:Settlement with guardian of Penelope D. Horn, orphan, by THOMAS B. HORN, Gdn, for 1818 and 1819.)
In regard to Thomas B. Horn, being the executor of the will of a Michael Horn in Edgecomb in 1815, the following may be noted. This Michael Horn, probably born about 1750 or later and deceased in 1815, was the son of Michael, a later son of William Horn (1690 - 1754)and was, therefore, another first cousin of Thomas B. Horn. This Michael Horn's 1815 will suggests that he was unmarried and childless.Little is apparently known about this man, although it is known that his father, Michael Horn, born about 1724, owned property along the Tyancokey Swamp, portions of which he sold to Elijah in 1763 and 1766 (cited by Edna Raiter). Therefore it seems clear that Thomas B. Horn and the Michael Horn for whom Thomas B was executor were likely to have been well acquainted as well as cousins, perhaps reason enough for selection as an executor.
Thomas V. and Catherine R, I would certainly like to hear what you think about this idea.
I would also like to know specifically if you have any information about the McField's, the maiden name, I assume, of Thomas Deaver's and Thomas Horn's wife, Penelope. What is your source for the name Penelope McField?
Sincerely,
Robert G. Horn

Notes for Penelope Mcfield (Deaver):
[ThosBHorn.FTW]
Data is based on information supplied by Thomas B. Horn, Valparaiso, Indiana,
and Catherine Rochelle, both descendants of Thomas B. Horn of Sumner County TN.
They propose that Penelope Mcfield first married Thomas Deaver of Edgecomb, (named in will of Elisha Horn Sr as a bordering neighbor), and second married Thomas B. Horn, unknown relation to Elisha Horn, but named in his will as a provider of bond/security of 3000 pounds.
Child of Thomas Horn and Penelope (Deaver) is:
