They lived in Dedham Ma. and settled in Lancaster,Ma. soon after.A record in the town record of Lancaster says, "John Houghton and his wife Beatrix, fled from Lancashire, England, to America to enjoy their religion."A sword that John brought from England has the rose and the thisle on it, previously mentioned as belonging to the family coat of arms granted by King James 1 in 1612 by writ under the privy seal, to Sir Roger as an augmentation to his coat of armour.The sword is now in the possesion of one of his descendents living in Washington,D.C.
John and Ralph Houghton, were distant cousins, together they were among the Founders of Lancaster Massachusetts, they were held in high esteem by their peers.
