Jefferson enlisted on 15 Oct 1862 at Huntsville in the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry, Company A. His physical description was as follows: "age 23, 5' 7" tall, Dark complexion, black eyes, black hair". He was discharged on 12 Jul 1865 as a Private.
The 1870 census for the 5th District of Morgan County lists Jefferson, a 29 year old farmer from Tennessee and his wife Lydia, who is 28 years old and from also Tennessee. Living with them are son James - age 4, son Isaac - age 3, son William - age 1 and daughter Kate - age 4 months.
The 1880 census for the 5th Civil District of Morgan County lists Jefferson HUMAN - age 39, a Tennessee born farmer and his wife Lydia - also age 39 and born in Tennessee. Living with them are sonJames W. - age 14, son Isaac - age 13, son William - age 12, daughter Catherine - age 10, daughter Hannah - age 9, son Charles W. - age 7, son Isham - age 5 and son Preston - age 3.

JEFFERSON HUMAN-CIVIL WAR LOVE, TRAGEDY--DIVIDED FAMILIES BY W. D. HUMAN:
Jefferson Human was born January 19, 1840, the son of Preston and Nancy Freels Human, near the present town of Sunbright.Preston and Nancy had three sons in the Union Army during the Civil War:Jefferson M., Edward F. (Ned), and Bazil M. Human.They served throughout the war in the same outfit, 4th. Tennessee Cavalry. Preston had a sister, Jane, who married Simeon Hurst.They lived on Bone (Boone) Camp in the west end of Morgan County.Jane and Simeon also had three sons in the Civil War, or War of the Rebellion:Sgt. Burlington Hurst, Pvt. Granville Hurst, and Sgt. Maryville Hurst.They served throughout the war in Company "D", 16th. Cavalry Battallion., Confederate Army. Simeon was killed near his home, "because he had befriended and fed confederates."
The main subject of this article is Jefferson's 113 year old love letter that he wrote to his "Miss Liddy" (Lydia Dorcas Davis) who later became his wife.She was the granddaughter of Abel Peak, Revolutionary War Soldier, and was the writer's grandmother (W. D. Human). The letter follows:

May 19, 1863
Miss Liddy,
I embrace the present opportunity of addressing you by letter for the first time ever in my life.As for health, I am enjoying the best, hoping when these lines come to hand they will find you enjoying the same good blessings, my dear. When these lines come to you lovely hand I hope you will not look at them with disguise, but take them to mind as being wrote for love and friendship, for I will tell you the story which long abideth in my heart, which by some means or other I never could pick up the courage to tell you before.That is your ladylike option and for which has gained my affection so deeply it appears to me that if I were only with you I could tell you ten times amount that I ever did before. So if you receive this letter you can appreciate my feelings toward you.
My dear, I heartily hope that you will not take umbrige at this, but when it meets you, try to let it meet you with a smile. Take it to your heart and my love be entwined around your heart as the grape vine around the bush.Long may it stand with you and never be forgotten.It is you that I placed a desire of conversation in when in our childhood we played around the play yards.Since we have grown more(next line not legible).
Then, madam, you must allow a man in this case to plead his own case.You must not take me to be too bad off, but consider the case that I and you have been raised up together and therefore I should not write you a letter like if I were writing to a stranger.
I will proceed to tell you of my getting away from the rebels.I got away from them at Saulsbury, North Carolina on the 8th day of January, 1863.It took me 25 days to come from there to Summersett(Somerset, Ky.) also I traveled over night.It was very hard on me indeed, for it rained and snowed on me pretty nigh all the time and I scarcely got anything to eat at all on my way, altho I never forgot you, my dear.Miles apart were we, but sometimes I dreampt of you.When I did not dream of you I made it up in thinking of you.
Miss Liddy, it is growing late and I am bound to close my letter so but a few moe words will I add.
Mr. Jefferson Human,enveloped in those lines love and affection, through them with a kind heart, my dear of fear of missing, a hand of winning you a partner, so no more at present.
