Notes for Frederick Alexander IMMEL:
1.12 Apr 1960. Born 1538, at David Grant Hospital, Travis AFB, Fairfield, CA.
2.Now, my Army days are another matter; I'd be more than happy to recount those tales!I realize that it wasn't the most productive period of my life, but everyone has got to have their "wild years".The Army years were mine.I went in on June 30, 1978.My basic training was at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, followed by Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. My first assignment was with Bravo Company, 1/502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. While there, I earned my Air Assault Wings after successful completion of Air Assault School, a 3 week course patterned after the Army's Jump School, except that trainees learned how to rappel from helicopters, and utilize helicopter support. After a little over a year, I obtained a "stateside swap" with another soldier in Ft. Ord, CA, and I finally made it back, close to my home.I had fun with the Screaming Eagles, but I missed my Mom and Dad.Some people would say that I was afraid to be away from the "nest", but all I can say is that something very important was missing from my life, and that emptiness wouldn't go away till I was close to you and Mom again. At Ft. Ord, I was assigned to Charlie Company, 6/31st Infantry, 7th Infantry Division. While at Ft. Ord I attended Jungle Operations Training at the Jungle School in Panama. It was quite an experience! One I'll always remember fondly.I spent my time training and getting drunk, a pattern that seem to develop everywhere I went in the Army. After Ft. Ord, I was sent to Camp Casey, Korea.I processed in at a place called the "Turtle Farm", so named because it took a person one year to go from Bldg. 5 (inprocessing) to the adjacent Bldg. 6 (outprocessing). From the Turtle Farm I was picked up by Jeep and taken to Warrior Base, in the American held sector of the DMZ.Warrior Base was nothing more than a small, featureless hilltop, on which, our battalion formed a 360 degree perimeter with our armored personnel carriers.A complete 180 degrees to our front lie the DMZ and North Korea. It was winter, cold and snowy, and a guy in our tent had crabs.I think that about sums it up!Each night we would be trucked out, with no headlights, only infrared; into the 1000 meter sector that makes up the DMZ, a buffer zone that stretched across the Korean Peninsula between the North Korean fenceline and the South Korean fenceline. We would dismount and quietly fade into the bushes, as the truck turned around and hurried back to the S. Korean side. From there we would, as quietly as our gear would allow, head to a predetermined ambush site and spend the night waiting for some sneaky little NKA infiltrator to wander past.Fortunately, it never happened and I just spent night after night, staring into the dark, freezing and trying to stay awake.Okay!I heard ya!!I'll shut up and get to the ending. As you can see, I can get a little long winded when it comes to my Army years.I'm not ashamed of that period of my life, as a whole; it was fun and I learned alot about myself and what was important to me.As you know, I went from Korea, back to Ft. Ord to outprocess.I left the Army on June 29th, 1982.I was a SP4 (E-4); I had received a Good Conduct Medal, and qualified Expert with the M16.That's about it!
