Beale moved with his family from Chester Co. PA to GA in 1777.He moved from GA to Wayne Co. IN in 1806.He entered land (314 acres) southeast of Centerville 4 Sept 1806.He was a Wayne Co. commissioner in 1818.
Butler family genealogy, p. 119.Beale Butler, son of Noble and Susannah (Beale) Butler was b. in Uwchlan Twp. Chester Co. PA 1 June 1766 and d. in Wayne Co. IN 12 June 1842.He was married near Wrightsboro, Georgia, about 1792 to Mary Stubbs (I believe her to be Mary Carter-LJ)She was b. 10 Oct 1763 and d. in IN on 7 July 1837.Both are buried at Whitewater Friends Meeting in IN.In 1794 Beale Butler was assessed as a Quaker in Warren Co. GA.In 1805 Beale Butler joined with his mother and his brothers and sisters in selling GA real estate and the following year Beale purchased 314 acres of land in Wayne Co. IN, southeast of Centerville.The removal of Beale with his mother and brothers and sisters from GA to IN followed the break-up of the Friends MM at Wrightsboro and the decision of many Quaker families to leave GA and re-settled in the middle west.The records indicate that Beale and his family were received by Friends MM at West Branch in 1809, and by Whitewater Friends MM near Richmond, Wayne Co. IN on 29 Jan 1810 having brought with htem a certificatel of removal dated in 1809 from New Garden NC MM to which Wrightsboro MM belonged.The census records for 1820 indicate Beale was a resident of Wayne Co.From 1829 to 1838 Beale Butler was an associate judge of the courts of Wayne Co.

Jesse and Rebecca moved from NC to Montgomery Co. OH in 1801.When they moved to Wayne Co. Indiana Territory around 1805 they were among the first settlers.Jesse built a grist and saw mill on the Elkhorn River 4 or 5 miles southeast of Richmond.Jesse was a Justice of the Peace, Indiana Territory 1815-1817; Associate Judge, Wayne Co. 1817-1824; and member of the IN-OH Boundary Commission 1818-1822.He was killed by a falling log in a barn raising.

p. 22-An early settlement was also made in 1806 about 4 or 5 miles southeast of Richmond by Jesse Davenport, Jacob Fouts, and his sons William and Jacob and his son-in-law Thomas Bulla, natives of NC, but immediately from OH.By the formation of Boston Twp. the land of Davenport was taken into this township.
p. 80-The first court in Wayne Co. was held Feb. 25, 1811.The names of the jurors for that trial included Jesse Davenport.

p. 154-Jesse Davenport built a grist mill on the falls of the Elkhorn Creek, believed to have been the third one in the county.A few years later he built a saw mill at the same place.
From John Scott Davenport:Jesse Davenport was one of the first Justices of the Peace in Wayne Co., Indiana Territory, and continued to serve until 1817 was the state of Indiana was formed.Then, Jesse, who had a merchant mill on the Elkhorn River, became one of the Associate Judges of the Wayne County Court.He was notoriously renown in early Indiana bench and bar legal annals for " never having allowed facts to influence his opinion."Jesse died in 1826 when drunken neighbors at a barn raising dropped the center beam on him and killed him instantly.

The following are from stones that could be found in this abandoned cemetery and from Quaker Records compiled by Willard Heiss. The church was a Preparative meeting under Whitewater Monthly Meeting. Evans of 47 S. 17th St. is now in her 82nd yr.She was b. in Boston Twp. near the Elkhorn on the 9th of Nov. 1820.Her parents, Jesse and Rebecca Davenport, came to this county at a very early day and entered the land where the old Elliott mill site now is, and Mr. Davenport there erected the first mill in that part of the county.One of his horses getting lost, he went in search and came upon the Elkhorn Falls, where the Wolfe mill now is, and beheld them, probably the first time they had been seen by any white man.He was struck by the scene and upon returning home took measures to enter the land about the falls, which he did in a short time after, and moved his mill and residence to that place.He and his wife raised a family of 14 children, of whom Nancy was the 11th child, and her brother, Warner Davenport, who still lives immediately south of the city was the youngest.Mrs. Evans being the 11th child, her oldest brother was much older than she, and she has 2 nieces who are much older than she is...... |
