Notes for John Beals:
John Beals was known to have been in PA in 1677.He must have come with some of the earliest William Penn settlers.Although illiterate, he was the constable of Ashton Township, Chester Co. PA in 1694.He and Mary were active in Quaker affairs.
He bought land known as the Nottingham Lots in Chester Co. PA.However, when the survey was done for the Mason-Dixon line in 1767 their land ended up in Cecil Co. MD.
Will of John Beals:
I, John Beals, of Nottingham in ye Co. of Chester being sick and weak of body but of a sound and disposing mind and memory do make this as my last will and testament revoking all other wills that have heretofore been made...
First, my will is that my just debts....
Secondly, I give and bequeath unto my eldest son John Beals my bed and all ye furniture thereunto belonging and 5 pounds he paying unto his 5 children Sarh, John, Thomas, Ann, and Phebe to each of them 10 shillings when they become of age.
Thirdly, I give unto my son William Beals 8 pounds he paying to each of his 3 children, Lydia, Mary, and Ruth 10 shillings when of age.
Fourthly, I give unto my daughter Mary Harrold 8 pounds she paying each to her children Elizabeth Rachell Jonathon and Richard 10 shillings when of age.
Fifthly, I give unto my son Jacob Beals 12 pounds he paying to his 4 children John Jacob Mary and William to each of them 10 shillings.
Sixthly, I give unto my daughter Patience Jones ye 8 pound 15 shillings that is due from her husband by bond and 5 pound more to be paid by my executors willing she or her husband pay unto their 4 children Judith Mary Sarah and Charity to each 10 shillings....
Seventhly, I give unto my daughter Mary Harrold and Patience Jones my warming pan and spice box;I give unto James Wright 4 shillings.
Eightly, I give unto my kinswoman Mary Davis of Philadelphia 20 shillings.Also my will is that my son William shall be paid his legacy first, my daughter Mary Harrold next and Patience her 5 pound next as ye money that is out upon bond becomes due.
Lastly, I ordaine and constitute my 2 sons John and Jacob Beals sole executors and of this my last will and testament witness my hand and seal dated in Nottingham ye 11 of ye 8th mo. 1726.
