Sharpless genealogy, p. 100-John Edge and wife Jane from St. Andrews, Holburne in County of Middlesex, England, settled 1685 in Neither Providence.He was an earnest member of the Society of Friends and the Monthly Meeting was often held at his house.He had been imprisoned in his native land for refusing to act contrary to his conscience and was subjected to heavy fines too. On one occasion even subjected to public trial.He died 5-19-1711 aged about 65.
Cleaver in the Jessup family history says the family was from Cheshire, not Holborne, Middlesex.From Cleaver, p. 375.In 1683 George Whitehead, grocer of Houndsditch, in the Liberty of London, was arrested for taking upon him to preach and teach.....After his conviction the constable...carried away his belongings...John Edge and Joseph Peckover, friends of Whitehead, complained civily to the constable and were immediately arrested as rioters, committed to Newgate Prison and detained for 10 weeks.Edge was also tried in Sept 1684 along with several others for ...under pretense of religion...
It is no wonder that John Edge was on the list of first purchasers of PA land from William Penn.The Chester MM was sometimes held at his house in Chester Co. PA.
He emigrated to America in 1685.
