Obituary-Winfield Daily, Tues. Nov. 24, 1931-Winfield's oldest resident succumbs-Mrs. Nancy Harcourt dies after 95 full years.
Winfield's oldest resident, Mrs. Nancy Harcourt died Mon. at her home...after a short illness.
Mrs. Harcourt was more than 95 years old.She had been a resident of Kansas since 1870 and Cowley Co. having settled at Rock at that time.
About 3 years ago, Mrs. Harcourt suffered a physical breakdown, up until which time she had been in remarkable physical trim.However, after several months she recovered and she was able to visit her neighbors and make her usual short trips.
Mrs. Harcourt enjoyed a wealth of memories which dated back more than 85 years.She was an interesting story teller and especially liked to recall the incidents of her childhool.One of the most interesting experiences she recalled was that of her conversion to Christian faith when she was a girl of 10, attending a camp meeting conducted by Peter Cartwright.
Mrs. Harcourt was born in Logan County, Illinois Feb. 17, 1836.When she was 28 years old she united in marriage with John M. Harcourt, and 12 years later the couple came to Kansas to settle on a farm near Rock.The coming of the Harcourts preceded the incorporation of Winfield by 3 years.Cowley county was organized the same year the family came to Kansas.
For 23 years the Harcourts lived on the homestead near Rock.On Sept. 16, 1893 they moved to Winfield, the day the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma was opened for settlement.
Mr. Harcourt died on Feb. 24, 1916 and since that time his widow has made her home with her son, George Harcourt.He and Mrs. Harcourt were the parents of 7 children, 3 of whom are now living.They are:George of Winfield:Harvey of Aurora, MO, and Mrs. Elise Fink San Diego, CA.Charles E., Alfred A., Walter S. and Lilly Harcourt preceded their mother in death.10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren survive.
Helped organize church-Mrs. Harcourt was a charter member of the Methodist Church at Rock and she worked in that church for many years.
Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Harcourt was active in the life of the community....
Burial will be in the Stalter Cemetery, 2 and 1/2 miles southwest of Rock.
