Notes for Father Kenneth J. MacDonald: Requested that all the fiddles in Cape Breton be burned. He failed in his task. From http://www.tullochgorm.com/priests.html In Antigonish County and many parts of Highland settled Cape Breton one of the most rigid, and ill reputed, churchmen was Father Kenneth a Catholic priest who served in the community of Mabou on the northwest side of Cape Breton Island. Known in Gaelic as Maister Coinneach, Father Kenneth’s intolerance of traditional life and especially the fiddle is one which is still evident in the oral tradition of the area. He is most fondly remembered for a mass burning of fiddles he initiated which took place in Mabou in the 1800’s. Despite the limited affect that many of these attempts to remove traditional culture from the given society have had, they often leave an overall sense that all churchmen possessed a total disregard for traditional culture. |
