Matthew enlisted in the Alabama National Guard, on January 27, 1916, at Andalusia, Alabama, for 3 years.He was called up for active duty to the United States Army, from June 19, 1916, to April 30, 1917.He served in the Mexican Border campaign, June 19, 1916 to March 22, 1917.He served as a machine-gunner, on a 30 Caliber, water cooled machine-gun.Matthew once said that the squad that he was in, held the record for removing a machine-gun from a pack mule, setting up and firing it within 30 seconds.
