Notes for Mary Van Camp or Van Campen:
"The information from 1784 is somewhat confused, as there seems tohavebeen two John Bices from New York who settled in Matilda Townshipin1784, and their children are all lumped together in the UEL records.Itseems fairly certain that John Bice and Mary Vancamp had a sonWilliamwho applied for his UEL grant of land and was awarded his landinDarlington (Bowmanville Area) in 1826. I have a copy of the Orderincouncil which granted him 200 acres as the son of a loyalist.Williammarried Ann Purdy, whose father had built the dam at Lindsay andcreatedLake Scugog. William served six months as a militia man in aflankcompany of the First Regiment of Dundas Militia during the warof1812-14.
William and Ann raised ten children at Darlington.Around 1846Williamand some of his sons moved to Middlesex County (between AilsaCraig andLucan) where they built sawmills and grist mills. The two eldestsonsstayed in Darlington (Lyman and Nelson). Ann died in McGillivrayTownship in 1857 or 1859. After her death William moved to theUnitedStates to live with son-in-law David Marr, and he died there ofyellowfever in1862.
