This is my mother, Clovis O'Deal Word Koon (1932-1973), earning her own way, before she met my father, Wiley Emmett Koon, MD (1928-present) andmarried. This picture was taken in Key West, Florida, in early 1950's.I think it is a WONDERFUL and GREAT pic of "Southern Lady" who died before her time! - Lomax House, Montgomery, AL-General Tennent Lomax (25 KB)
Home of my second cousin, five times removed, General Tennent Lomax,in Montgomery, AL. He was killed in battle at the head of a "Confederate" Regiment, May 31, 1862.He married Miss Caroline Shorter, in Montgomery. He was also a soldier in the Mexican War and was a lawyer, and several years the editor of the Columbus, GA Times. The famous "Lomax Rifles", Capt. F.P. Davis, of Mobile, was named in his honor; so was the "Lomax Station," in the State of AL.James J. Gilmer, brother of George R. Gilmer, governor of Georgia built the house in 1848. Later he deeded it to Reuben C. Shorter, Jr., war-time governor of Alabama.Shorter's widow married General Tennent Lomax. The house is an office builing as of 1967. - Wiley E. Koon, MD and Clovis O'Deal Word Koon (37 KB)

This is the monument, to my Uncle Alpheus Cary Koon, Jr.He, as seen on this web site, danced with Dame Alicia Markova and many other famous ballerinas. He danced with the St. Louis Municipal Opera from 1939-1940, Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre), the Original Ballet Russe, Radio City Music Hall, and CBS and NBC television. He formed the Tampa Ballet in 1953 with my grandmother, Jennie Carlyle Powers Koon, making the costumes.Priscilla MacDonald was his "Prima Ballerina".I danced with the Joffrey Ballet myself, before going on to get my college education, and am working on my doctorate as of January of 2002!He was a great man!He finally taught what he new while playing the piano and instructing at the same time!My grandmother and I both respect him, his abilities and genious always.Love you, Uncle Alpheus. - Jennie Carlyle Powers Koon and Wiley E. Koon, Jr. (9 KB)
This was taken at my grandmother's house on March 6, 1996 on her 98th birthday. She is a another descendant of Thomas Tugwell and the was the oldest living granchild of Arthur A. Powers of Palmyra/Montgomery/TN.She was born March 6, 1898 and died January 31, 2001 at 102.She remained "still sharp as a tack." - Arriving at Our New House on Cypress Gardens Road (20 KB)
Moving into our new house, at Cypress Gardens Rd.From here, we could see, from our house, at Lake Florence, to Lake Martin (the back side of Cypress Gardens), the "Belles" which came every day.I knew what a "Belle" was, and is now, before I saw and became an expert on Southern History (I possess a degree in History), and the history is truly misunderstood. For instance, "Dixie", was written, in 1859, for a minstel show in OHIO!Anyhow, another treasure found! This is the house in which we lived until, my mother's death, and then we moved to the house on Lake Otis, in Winter Haven, where the balcony covered the entire portion of back of the house overlooking the lake. - Painting of Howard's Grove Hospital (176 KB)
This is a paiting, by an unknown Confederate, of Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. My 2nd great-grandfather, Absalom Koon, CSA,died here in January of 1865 of smallpox during the Battle of Petersburg. His body as well as many others were burnt as they did not have space to bury them. Please visit the link below for the history of this horrible place. - At 6 years old, throwing my Judo Insructor (29 KB)
This is me at six years old throwing my Judo instructor. - Map of Howard's Grove Hospital, circa 1865 (43 KB)
This is map of how large Howard's Grove Hospital, in Richmond, Virginia, became circa 1865. My 2nd great-grandfather, Absalom Koon, CSA died here of small pox in January or 1865. They burnt his body along with many others as they didn't have the time nor space to bury them. I am a Son of Confederate Veterans (SCV), by direct descent from him.Recently, relatives in North Florida, placed a monument next to his wife, Lavinia Amanda Taylor Koon (see www.wwtaylor.org and check for this under Lavinia Taylor Koon). I think this most appropriate, after finding out this information yesterday, due to my second cousin, once removed! Please see link below for additional information on this horrible and filthy place. HIs older brother, Frederick Hartwell Koon, served in the same company and is buried in the church he founded, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, just outside of Lake City, Florida. They came from South Carolina in the 1850s to North Florida. The house, on the former plantation, is, as far a I know still standing (as of 1990). What a find! In April of 1865, both the federal and confederate soldiers, were placed here. It is my understanding that they buried the federals and burnt the Confederates! - Helen Word Simpson and Clovis Word Koon (13 KB)
This was a picture taken in 1953 of my mother's graduation from X-Ray school at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Her sister was there, as was my uncle. They encouraged her to complete. This is how she worked and paid the bills while Daddy went through Medical School! The arrangement that the person in the middle is holding is the center piece of the table where they sat during this celebration. Far left, Helen Word Simpson (1922-2003), far right, Clovis O'Deal Word Koon (1932-1973). - Welcoming Letter to Sons of Confederate Veterans (282 KB)
This is my welcoming letter from Sons of the Conferderate Veterans (SCV).As my poor scanner will only take 8/12 x 11 pics, and my cerficate is 11 x 14, I can't display the certificate at this time. I am directly decsended from Absalom Koon, who died of small pox, and burned, in Richmond, Virginia in January of 1865. There is a link below of this monstrous hospital where he died. Am proud to be SOUTHERN, BY THE GRACE OF GOD! - Dollie Mae Middleton Word (11 KB)

This is a copy of my 5th great grandfather's, George Adam Kuhn (Koon), born 1744 in Germany and d. circa 1815-1821. His son Martin, must have pre-deceased him as he gives a vast amount of his belongings to Martin Koon, Jr. (1799-), my third great grandfather and his two brothers, Emmanuel and Henry. He only leave, out of nine children, estate items to his son, David. This is curious. By the way, Rosana Barbara Long was NOT the mother of his children, and we don't know who the mother was. You can see under the pics and reports of this web site, the house that his grandson, Martin Koon, Jr., my third great grandfather and father of Absalom Koon (1822-1865) built and lived in Newberry, SC. He died in Edgefield Co., SC and, we don't know why, but George Adam was living with Martin, Jr. at the time of his death. Another mistery to get! What fun! I have heard stories of her burying the enough of the family treasures so the Yankees would not suspect when they came through and pillaged during the Battle of Olustee in North Florida in 1864. She would loan money to people after the war and would foreclose on the date due if not paid by the borrower. I did not know it at the time, but I won the tap scholarship that night, and my sister won the ballet scholarship in 1969, both from the Taylor Studio of Dance Arts, in Winter Haven, Florida. I danced a duet that night. I am in my "duet" costume and my sister is in her acrobatics costume. Taken a Nora Mayo Auditorium, in Winter Haven, Florida. Alpheus Cary Koon, Jr. (son of Alpheus Cary Koon, MD - 1890-1953) and Jennie Carlyle Powers Koon - 1898-2001). He is the uncle of Wiley Emmett Koon, Jr., founder of this web site. I can think that this was taken in March of 1937, when he was a pre-medical student at the University of Tennessee (as was his father's, Alpheus Cary Koon, MD who graduated from here in 1916; my father Wiley Emmett Koon, MD and my brother, Dr. James Earl Koon followed those foosteps). He later left there to become a great ballet dancer and partnered the greatest ballerinas of that time (Ballet Theatre, now American Ballet Theatre, 1941-1945). He formed the Tampa Ballet in 1953, and my grandmother, Jennie Carlyle Powers Koon, designed and made the costumes I, Wiley Emmett Koon, Jr., have a great deal in common with my uncle - he went to college first and then joined the ballet, I, on the other hand, joined the ballet and then went on to receive my BA and MA and am now working for a doctorate - not medical, though. So I suppose we are visa versa, as it were. The costumes from the first performance of the Tampa Ballet as well as his notes, etc. are now on permanent display at the Tampa Historical Society. I, Wiley, did this myself with a great celebration in 1995! My uncle has always and will be an inspiration to me and I can only hope to live up to the "Beacon" which he became! To all my family! I was reared along the lines of what Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy quoted in "A Tour of the White House whith Mrs. John F. Kennedy, "...as long as it's the best." My father once explained two things to me, Wiley Emmett Koon, Jr., - One - ("ANYBODY can be a SLOB!") and Two - ("There IS a BIG difference between an excuse and a reason"). He, as always is right! He raised four very successful children, almost singehandedly, and became and is one of the best physicians in the nation! He has had many ups and downs during his life from which most may be able to learn, and has come out being not only a model father who taught his children the meanings of honesty, responsiblity and valor, but also on how to live life with happiness! There is and never will be a father or man who looks like him, acts like him, talks like him, or does things in the unique ways he does, like him. He is a beacon of what all humans should strive to be! He is a very happy man, and I love my father with all of my heart, prayers and being. This is the certificate for my 2nd-great grandfather, William Henry Wilson (1836-1886) born in SC and moved to Lake City/Columbia/FL with his family. He was a newspaper publisher and owned the newspaper there at that time. Point Lookout Prison for the Confederates was much worse than Andersonville for the Dirty Yankees! We had no food to give them at Andersonville, and so they took it out on us. There are over 14,000 deaths, many from our family who died there. Many were captured and sent there. Unfortunately, William Henry Wilson was captured April 1, 1865, just a few months before the War Between the States ended. He remained there until June of 1865 when he was forced to sign the "Oath of Allegiance" to the Yankess. This was a terrible place and I feel very strongly about this subject. - Male Koon's circa 1942 (43 KB)

Emily Koon Allard is the youngest child and only daughter of (having three older brothers) of Alpheus Cary Koon, MD (1890-1953), and Jennie Carlyle Powers Koon (1898-2001). She is the younger sister of my father, Wiley Emmett Koon, MD (1928-present). I think it is a lovely picture of two very special individuals in my family, and am truly honored to have them at just that, MY FAMILY. They display the best and all in what family should be.
