Notes for Thomas Cranston:
According to "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" published in 1909, Thomas was a son of Samuel. Thomas was Speaker of the RI House of Representatives at the time of incorporating the new town of Cranston. The original document of incorporation has a line through the new town name, Lynn, and Cranston substituted in its place, a last minute change. The RI Historical Preservation Commission suggests it was not likely named after Samuel who had been dead 27 years and was from Newport and not likely thought of at the last minute. RIHPC has found on the first page of the first town record book the inscription "the gift of Thomas Cranston to the town called Cranston..." It is known that other towns were named after polititians and Theodore Foster presented a book to the town bearing his name.
