| Nicholas was baptized in the New York Dutch Reformed church, and he married in the Flatbush Dutch Reformed church.Like his brother Abraham, Nicholas was one of the owners of their father's Flour Mill in Gowanus.They both worked this mill most of their lives. He inherited some of this property from his father, but most of the mill, and land was purchased from their mother, and siblings.On 12 August, 1698 Nicholas, and his brother purchased these properties.The mill was referred to by the locals as the "Yellow Mill".Nicholas, and his brother Abraham purchased more land in 1709, and built a new Grist mill on this property.He helped his brother dam the Gowanus Kill, so that they could build a mill pond.His mill was later known as "Denton's Mill", and it was located on the northeast side of 1st street, midway between 2nd, and 3rd avenues.In 1698 Nicholas was living in Bushwick, Brooklyn.By 1704 he was operating his mill in Gowanus bay.From 1709-1719 Nicholas appears to have owned some land in Fordham manor, now in the Bronx, New York. On 01 April, 1726 he sold a lot in the East ward of New York city to Mary Sinclair,who was listed as the widow of Robert Sinclair.Nicklaes was a witness to a baptism in the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed church on 14 May, 1693.He was also witness to another baptism in this church on 19 March, 1696. Witness to his baptism was Ariaentie Scherps. His marriage record lists his name as Berkhoven, not Brouwer. |
