Abt. 1812 in New York City, daughter of Mr. Russell. She was born April 26, 1793 in New York, or New Jersey, and died Abt. 1865 in Hudson county, New Jersey.
Notes for William La Tourette:
The exact date of William's birth is still a mystery, but we know that he was baptized on 01 Nov., 1792 in Port Richmond Dutch church. There is some discrepancies in his birth date based on census, military, and death records. His date of birth is placed between 1783-1792,but in the Isiah Merrill family bible the date was 01 Nov., 1792.Based on census records it was probably between 1789, and 1792.In all the census records he was listed as being between these ages, and his wife Mary Anna Russell's age in these records was between 1789-1793, which coincides with William's age. However, the 1812 Pension records list his age as much older, and his death certificate indicates a much older age. That William La Tourette was the only man who actively participated in the War of 1812, with this name, and that he was the same who died in 1877 in Jersey City is all the evidence needed to tie this man as the son of John, and Elizabeth.Ample evidence exists to preclude that this William was indeed the son of the above named, for his ages in the difference census records, and his death certificate fits perfectly. His death certificate states that he was indeed the son of John, and Elizabeth. Also all the family bibles list William, who married Mary Anna Russell, as the son of John, and Elizabeth, and that he died in 1877.The actual age at this death could not have been 98 years old. This must have been a mistake, the person giving the information probably guessed.More likely he would have been between 85 to 89.The Cornelius Driggs La Tourette files in the New York Genealogical, and biographical Society Library leads to this same conclusion.Thusly, based on old family bible records, census records, family lore, military records, death records, and unpublished manuscript records in the NYGB Library it is more than evident, with a high degree of probability that our William was indeed the son of John La Tourette, and Elizabeth Merrill of Staten Island. Our William La Tourette died, at any rate, a very old man while living with family at 222 Communipaw avenue in Jersey City, Hudson county, New Jersey. He was buried at the Bayshore Cemetery in that city. His death certificate (New Jersey State Archives page, 495, volume BC) lists his place of birth as Staten Island, which is correct, and he died of Senile Gangrene. William lived with his parents up until at least 1810 in Northfield, Staten Island. He is found in the 1800 census as being the boy born ca. 1784-1790.The first time we see him in actual records is 15 Sept., 1814,when he enlisted, and served first in Captain Barnes company of Staten Island militia during the war of 1812.He was probably between 22 or 25 at this time.No marriage record survives for William, but we know that by 1813-1814 he met, and married a woman named Mary Anna Russell. The circumstances of their meeting is not known, and the location, or actual marriage record has not been found. We know that he married Mary A. Russell based on the following information. First the census records of 1850, and 1860 list her name as Mary A.The Isiah Merrill bible record lists her name, and the Verne Jacobs, and Cornelius Driggs La Tourette records list her as well. Also the death certificate of Elizabeth Brada, their daughter, in 1899 Jersey City, lists William La Tourette as her father, and Anna as her mother. The all conclusive record is the death certificate of John William La Tourette in Jersey City which lists his father again as William, and his mother as Anna Russell. However, little is known about the life, and family of Mary Anna Russell, except what is shown in the Russell chapter of this work.At any rate, our William married Mary Anna probably during the time frame of his serving in the Staten Island Militia ca. 1814 or so.It is possible that the marriage took place in either Staten Island, or in New Jersey. After serving in Captain Barnes regiment on Staten Island, William joined Captain John Tyson's regiment in the Richmond county Military under Lt. Col. Conner. He mustered into this regiment on 13 Sept., 1814, and he mustered out on 29 Nov., 1814 while still living in Staten Island. He was a Private, and records show that he was still in uniform as of 13 Dec., 1814,by then in Captain Barnes regiment. He was paid $8.00 a month for his duty, and his service records show that he died on 26 July, 1877 (War of 1812 Service records 11936).It is not known for sure whether William ever saw action during his short military stint.Based on the records of his children he must have relocated to Hoboken, Hudson county, New Jersey by 1815, already married, and with at least 2 children.Due to the lack of any 1820 New Jersey census records, and the fact that he is not found in any 1820 New York census records would lead us to believe that in fact he was now living in this area of New Jersey. He had relatives in this area, so no doubt it was easy for him to relocate, and his grandfather Paul La Tourette had owned land in this area before this date. Also, we know that he worked as an Oysterman, and a study of the Oyster business in New York at this time indicated that many of the Oyster beds in the Long Island area,in Brooklyn, and Staten Island were being overworked, but off the coast of Jersey City, the Hudson river served as the next major work place for people with this profession, and the census records in this area attest to this profession very often. In the 1830 Bergen, New Jersey census we find William living in Hoboken, near Bergentown, and living in the household was a woman aged 70-80,who was born between 1750-1760.They lived down the block form John W. Russell, the brother of William's wife Mary Anna.William was not listed in the 1840 Bergen county census. The author has conducted a page by page search, and no one of this name was found in that county. In the 1850 New Jersey census records we find William again living in Hoboken, he being listed as William Latturet aged 57, and Mary A. age 56, both of New York.No children were now listed in their household. He worked at this time as an Oysterman. Also in 1850 William applied for a pension through the New York office, stating that he enlisted and served in Captain Barnes company of Staten Island from 15 Sept., to 08 December, 1814, in the 146th New York militia. He listed his age at this time as 59, while the census record stated that he was actually 57, no doubt he squeezed a couple of extra years on to his age so that he could qualify for the pension. At this time he received 120 acres of land as a bounty, but he must have sold this land, or gave it as a gift to one of his children, for he did not own such in 1877 when he died. Also on 18 Nov., 1850 he received another land bounty of 40 acres for serving in Captain John Tyson's militia company in the 146th regiment in New York. This record indicated that he was living in Staten Island at this time, but this was a mistake, for he was actually in Jersey city now.On 11 April, and 25 April, 1851 he was approved for the 40 acres of land warrant (Number 4481).On 26 March, 1855 William Latterett, now aged 63 was living in Patterson, New Jersey, and he again applied for additional pension, stating that he served as a Corporal in Captain Barnes company in the war of 1812.He received an additional bounty grant (17474) at this time.Other records show that on 03 March, 1855 he received another bounty land grant (11834, and 38784).It is not known what he did with all this property, or where the land was located. He did not own any property at the time of his death in 1877.By 1857 William was living at 341 South 7th street, and then by 1859 at 29 Monmouth court in Jersey City.In the Jersey City directories he was listed during this time as an Oysterman. In the 1860-1862 Jersey city directories he was now living at 218 railroad street, along with his son John William La Tourette.Another address appears as his residence at this time in Jersey city as being 67 Communipaw street. In the 1860 Jersey city census he was living in the 3rd ward, as William Latterette now aged 71, a seaman who was born in New York, along with his wife Mary A. aged 70, also of New York, and a daughter named Margaret Allen who was 45 years old, being born ca. 1815 in New Jersey, which adds credence to William, and Mary moving to New Jersey just before that date.It is not known whether Margaret married a Mr. Allen, or whether that was a middle name. But she was not in the 1850 census records, so this author believes that she married a Mr. Allen. On 14 Feby., 1871 William was now living in New York (War of 1812 Pension records), and he stated that he first served under Captain Barnes, and then under Captain John Tyson during the war of 1812.He received his pension on 09 June, 1871, being about 79-83 at this time. The pension number was 19081, and by 03 Feby., 1872 he received a monthly pension of $8.00.On 07 June, 1871 William appeared before the New York Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court for this pension. He stated at this time that he was presently widowed, and that his wife died in 1865.He listed at this time that he lived at 442 5th avenue, in New York city.William does not appear in either the New Jersey, or New York city census in 1870.On 14 Nov., 1871 the Department of the Interior sent a letter to William requesting further information in which said letter again states that he served in both Capt. Barnes, and Capt. Tyson's regiment, and the claim number was 17081.On 03 Feby., 1872 William received a survivors pension for serving in Captain John Tyson's company. He was awarded a pension of $8.00 a month retroactive to 14 Feby., (number 11936).At this time the Hoboken City Directories places him as living at 187 Garden street in that city. He continues to appear in this cities records up until 1875, just two years before his death. At the time of his death in Jersey City in 1877 his daughter Elizabeth Brada (Brady) stated that her father William Latterette, died in Jersey City on 26 July, 1877, and that he left no property, or minor children. She paid for his funeral, a total of $108.00.Elizabeth requested that this funeral expense be repaid to her from her father's pension fund due from the Government. No action was taken in this regards (Vital Statistics, Trenton, New Jersey).
Notes for Mary Anna Russell:
Virtually nothing is known about the early life of Mary Anna Russell, other than that she was born somewhere in New York.Where in New York is not known, but it is assumed that it was around New York city, Long Island, or Staten Island.A very thorough search of Richmond county records, including a search made by the Staten Island Historical Society has yielded no clues to this family in that county. No doubt if the Russell family lived in this area, it was later than the 1820's.The author has also done a very thorough search of New York probate records, especially for the New York City area, and no matches have been found.A search of all the known NYC church records have not proved helpful, except for a Polly Russell born to Abraham Russell, and Hilteye Elsworth of NYC, but she married another man, based on NYC marriage records. Also a daughter of this name was born to a Henry Russel of Oyster bay, Long Island, but he did not have any son named John W. Russell. This author then conducted a search of the 1790-1820 New York census records of this area, and listed only those households which would have had a daughter, and son of this age bracket. I then traced out these families as best I could, and narrowed down my search to only a couple of families. Based on the fact that both William La Tourette, and John W. Russell were Oystermen, and that this trade was only found in the Staten Island, Oyster bay, and the New Jersey areas would tend to give this Russell family an origin in these areas, and considering no Russell family lived in Staten Island, this would only leave Oyster Bay, Long Island, and the only two families of this surname found in the Oyster Bay records were a John Russell from the 1810 census, and he did have a son and daughter, unnamed, of the proper age bracket, but nothing is known of this family, and the other was Henry Russell of Oyster Bay who had a daughter named Mary, but no known son named John W. Russell. It is known from one record that Henry Russell was a boatman, and that his trade was the sea, a trade this family seems to have followed for a long time. It is very possible that John W. Russell of Hudson County, New Jersey was not a brother of our Mary Anna Russell, but instead was a first cousin, he may be the son of the John Russell who also lived in Oyster Bay in the 1810 census. I place him as a brother, because this is what the records seem to indicate, but the door is open as to where on our family tree he really belongs. It is this authors belief that Mary Anna Russell was either the daughter of Henry Russell, or of John Russell of Oyster Bay, Long Island. In NYC, based on the 1800 census records, Mary may have been the daughter of a James Russell, a Richard Russell, or of The Widow Russell. Also that John W. (V). Russell was either her brother, or a first cousin, and that both Henry, and John of Oyster bay were probably related. However, no proof exists, so this author has left all this on the table for now, with the hope that further research will bring out the truth of the origin of this Russell Family.
