Notes for JOSEPH DIMARCO:
Around 1900, thousands of Italian families emmigrated to New York
City. They were poor, uneducated, and had no job skills. They lived
three and four families to an apartment.Their children were hungry
and had illnesses. The New York welfare department felf that it would
be more humane to ship the children to farm families in the Central
States. The Italian parents were told that their children were being
taken to the orphanage to be fed and taken care of.They would be
returned to their parents. The farm families were told that the
children were orphans.
When the orphan train arrived in Mansura, Vallerie boarded and selected
the child he wanted.Joseph had measles when he arrived in Mansura.
Vallerie signed a contract for Joseph with the New York Foundling
Hospital and also signed by Sister Teresa Vincent, treasurer of the
hospital. The contract specifies that Joseph was to have suitable and
proper board, lodging and medical attendance. If he is returned to
the Foundling Hospital when he becomes 21 years of age, then Vallerie
will give him a new bible, a complete suit of new clothes, together
with all those he shall then have in use, and an outfit of at least
the same as their own child in very respect. The contract also
provided that Joseph would be instructed in all branches of education
ordinarily taught to the children of Vallerie, such being the ordinary
branches of school education as required by law, including reading,
writing and the general rules of arthmetic, and will bring him up in a
moral and correct manner, and in the Catholic faith. He will be
maintained, clothed, educated and treated with like care and
tenderness as if he were in fact the child of Vallerie, and will provide
for him, financially and in every other way, as if he was adopted by
Vallerie.
Worked in an ice house in New Orleans, La.Stuck an ice pick in his
hand and died of blood poison.
Laid out in the home of Louis Vallerie Chatelain.
