The following notes provided by Judith Ann HAMMOND, Apr 2001:
Living in Lafayette County, MS, in 1850 Census.Never located after 1860 Census.
William's found documentation:
a. Mention in Deed Book L, page 354, re: father Joseph, Surry County, NC.
b. Marriage record to Eve COLLINS. 30 Dec 1813, Surry County, NC.
(Note: Jasper Sanford HAMMON & family living in same Township 1860, page 91, F & D 616. William Sr., Jasper and William J. HAMMONS only family by the name Hammond/Hammons/Hamons living in this township in 1860.)
1850 Census, Jasper Sanford and his brother, George W. HAMMON were living next door to each other in Lincoln County, TN.George W. disappears & have never found him again.Jasper & family came in 1852/53 to Hempstead County, AR.
No actual proof that William is Jasper's father. Jasper states in 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880 Census that his father and mother were both born in North Carolina. (One Census said South Carolina.) The proximity of Jasper and Joseph in 1860 (Hempstead County, AR), almost certainly indicates a relationship.Note: Jasper had a son named William.
Per Cousin Elinor SUITOR in a letter dated 1 Nov 1980 from Oklahoma City ,OK, re: a "lady from Norman, OK, who called Elinor after reading her Belle Starr death story in the newspaper--(there was a Hammond family story about Belle's death that recounted her stop for good cornbread at a "neighbor of the Hammonds near Hoyt".The Norman, OK, lady--unnamed in Elinor's letter --said she was a member of this neighbor family and was able to recall & describe several of the Hammonds correctly--Uncle Claude Hammond & Uncle Walter Hammond. The Norman lady said "her grandfather was the stepson of William J. (Tall) Hammond & she said "Tall" and Francis Marion HAMMOND were cousins or something. Also said Hammond roots were Holly Springs, MS, to Franklin County, TN, to Sebastian County, AR.This letter from Elinor re-read today, 2 Jun 1994, gave me a clue in light of what we know today that we didn't know in 1979.
19 July 1994, today found William and Eve HAMMOND in the 1850 Census after 15 years+ of looking. In Lafayette County, MS, Township L, page 302, D#1083.
Also with them were additional children + William J. HAMMON & Allen HAMMOND + George COLLINS, age 45, & wife, Matilda.Based on children' ages & places of birth, they were all in Tennessee until after 1840 Census.
Looking at Tennessee Census Index, only one county in 1830 had a William HAMMON & a George COLLINS (believe he is Eve's younger brother) that county was Wilson County, TN, which adjoins Davidson County on the East. Thus accounting for Jasper Sanford's birth "at Nashville". That would have been nearest recognizable town in 1819.
I believe this proves that Jasper is the son of William & Eve as I have always believed, but never proved.More research needed in Wilson County, TN, Lafayette County, MS, & in Arkansas after 1860.
We have William Joseph HAMMOND, b. 1838 in Tennessee (per 1860 Hempstead County, AR, Census). He lived next to William & Eve Collins HAMMON in Missouri Township & nearby was Jasper Sanford HAMMOND & family.William Joseph married, first Martha SELLERS of Hempstead & they had no children at time of 1860 Census. If William Joseph is "Tall" HAMMOND, then did Martha die & he remarry?Did he later move on to Sebastian County, AR, when Jasper & family went on to Navarro County, TX?We know the Jones' went on to Sebastian--at least so Elinor has always said.Did William & Eve die in Sebastian after moving with younger son William Joseph?
As to the Holly Springs, MS, then Franklin County, TN -- that is reversed -- they would have lived in Franklin County, TN, fIrst (always a possible Hammon site in TN) & then moved on Southwest to Holly Springs, MS, & then to Arkansas. That is Marshall County, MS, just South & East of Memphis, TN.I will check Holly Springs & Sebastian -- check Holly Springs 1850 Census--Sebastian for 1870 Census.
This may be our big break. If we are correct & William & Eve COLLINS HAMMOND are the parents of Jasper Sanford HAMMOND, then his brother William Joseph & Francis Marion, his son, would have been nephew & uncle -- or if William Joseph was the grandson of William & Eve, they would have indeed been fIrst cousins. William Joseph was 19 years younger than Jasper Sanford.

Notes for Eve COLLINS:
The following note provided by Judith Ann HAMMOND, Apr 2001:
In 1790 Census of Surry County, NC, only one COLLINS is listed, Obadiah 1-3-3-0-0 (1 adult male, 3 under 16 males, 3 females of all ages).None of these could be Eve because she was not born until 1797, but was born in North Carolina per Hempstead County, AR, Census.Note: There are 3 COLLINS listed in the Stokes County, NC, 1790 Census: Jeremiah 1~3-4-0-0; Roger 1-1-4-0-0; and Watson? 1-4-2-0-0. Jeremiah and Roger could be the sons of Thomas COLLINS, grandfather of Eve, who were born about 1750 and 1754 in Virginia.Watson? could be one of their sons?
