- The MAIN family plot in Portage Prairie Cemetery. (16 KB)
Portage Prairie cemetery on Adams Rd NW of South Bend, IN is where Christopher Main and his wife Amelia (Millea) Weaver are buried. Orrin Main & Millie Main Conway are also in the family plot while Olive Main Myler and Noise (Noyes?) Main are buried in separate plots with their families. - Bales Cemetery, Henry County IN. (37 KB)
Bales cemetery is the resting place for Christopher Main Jr. his wife Mahala Johnston and some members of their family including sons Samuel (1821-1842), David A. (1835-1872) and Lewis W. (1836-1872). Also buried here are some children of Wm J. Main and his first wife Rachel Wrightsman, but I can not find the stones for Wm J & Rachel. The cemetery is east of the White Branch Church. - Christopher Main Jr.'s headstone (1795-1882) (40 KB)
Christopher Jr. and his wife Mahala Johnston (1800-1865) are in their own fenced plot. Some of their children and grandchildren are buried adjacent to this plot. Henry County records indicate Christopher died March 4, 1882. - Ulrich Cemetery, Wayne County, IN. (55 KB)
William Main (1800-1886) and his wife Martha McMullen (1804-1893) as well as some of their children are buried in this off the beaten path cemetery. Cemetery care is now wonderful as Jefferson Township assumed responsibility and in 2007 had significant restoration work done . THANK YOU. - James Myler and Olive Main Myler got a new stone. (15 KB)
Concerned members of the Myler family replaced the stone for the founders of their line. I learned after I took the picture that children's names are inscribed on the back of the stone. This monument is in the Portage Prairie Cemetery. NOTE: This cemetery is on Adams Rd, German Twp., St. Joseph County, INDIANA and not in Michigan. Some people believe Olive was born 16 May 1799. - Hodson Cemetery, north of Mooreland, in Henry Co. (43 KB)
Ira Main (1806-1859) and his wife Malinda Thornburg (1812-1897) are buried here, although their stones are not identifiable due to the neglect of the cemetery. This cemetery has recently been cleaned up though the efforts of the Henry County Cemetery Commission. - Mooreland Cemetery, Mooreland, Henry County, IN. (23 KB)
Henry Main (1827-1909) is the 3rd son of Christopher Jr. and the grandson of Christopher Sr. Henry's wife Magdalena Collingsworth (1828-1913) is buried here as well as other 3rd and 4th generation family members. - Christopher & MahalaMain plot at Bales Cemetery (206 KB)
The Henry County Indiana Cemetery Commission has and continues to do a fantastic job of cleaning up pioneer cemeteries in need of better care than they have been receiving. This small plot was totally over grown and was cleared during a recent clean up day by volunteers. See the link below tothe Henry County Cemetery Commission for more photos of their good work.THANKS FOLKS. - Refurbished Wm Main stone at Ulrich Cemetery (83 KB)
Indiana law has made township government responsible for maintenance of pioneer cemeteries. Jefferson Twp of Wayne County has done a wonderful job and this old stone is again readable due to cemetery restoration work.
