Olaf led a Viking fleet against England and raided the coasts of Essex, Kent, Sussex and Hampshire.He made peace with King Ethelred and said he would no longer trouble England.
Earl Haakon of Norway, was afraid Olaf would come to Norway to claim the throne.In 995, Haakon sent Thore Klakka to lure him to Norway.Olaf sailed with five ships to where Thore led him, right into the stronghold of Earl Haakon.Olaf landed at Moster Island in Hordland.He set up camp and had a Christian service on the shore, and set up cross.Earl Haakon's plan backfired and the people rallied behind Olav.A Oere-Thing was called at the mouth of the River Nid and Olaf was proclaimed King of Norway.He travelled to all the areas of Norway and was welcomed as King.
He started his quest to Christianize Norway at Viken, where his father was from.His priests told the people that Odin and Thor had power, but had been defeated by Jesus.The big difference was that Odin and Thor delighted in war and bloodshed.Christ called people to peace.He brought Bishop Sigurd with him.He proceed to Christianize Agder.He was opposed in South Hordaland, but then the chieftains choose to convert.In 996, he went to Trondelag, where the great temple to the old gods stood.He broke down the altars and destroyed the images.At first the people opposed him, but then they built a church on the site of the old temple.Olaf laid the foundation for the city of Nidaros, which became known as Drontheim.
In 999 he sent Thangbrand to evangelize Iceland.Thangbrand had good success at first, but he drew his sword and killed someone and was banished from the island.
It was the year 999 that Leif Eriksson visited Olaf in Norway.Olaf convinced Leif to convert to Christianity.Leif returned to Greenland and evangelized the island.
His wife Thyra, greatly missed her homeland and persuaded Olaf to try to capture some of the land that was hers.Olaf built a large boat, called "the Long Serpent."It was about 112 feet long, with 52 oars on either side and held 600 warriors.All the warriors had to be at least 20 years old, and no older than 60.He set sail with 60 vessels for Denmark.He met with King Burislav and settled the question of her estates peacefully.He intended to return to Norway, but was delayed by Earl Sigvalde of the Jomsvikings.Olaf was led into a trap between Rugen and Pomerania.There waited a large fleet of Swedes, Danes and some Norsemen, under Earl Erik. A great battle ensued.Olaf's men fell around him.He was wounded but fought on till he was one of eight left standing.As the enemy rushed him, he took his shield and jumped overboard.He probably drowned.One story says Aastrid, Earl Sigvalde's wife sent a galley which rescued him, and that he made a pilgrimage to Rome, where he died a hermit.
