A great deal has been written concerning the political activities of Sir John Hussey during t he reign of Henry VIII and even though all data were abstracted from original court records , some details vary slightly. He fought on the king's side at Stokes in 1486 and became comp troller of the royal household. Hussey received large grants of land in Lincolnshire and neig hboring counties, became one of the council, master of the king's wards, knight of the body , and took 340 men to the French War in 1513, when he was one of the commanders in the rear g uard.He was employed on various diplomatic missions, and was sent as envoy to the emporor a fter the Field of Cloth of Gold.
John Hussey was amoung those knighted at the battle of Blackheath, Jun 17, 1497.He was mad e a 'Knight Banneret', possibly at the Battle of Spurs, in France on 16 Aug. 1513.A bannere t had the privilege of leading his
retainers to battle under his own flag. They ranked at the next order below Knights of the Ga rter providing they were created by the king on the field of battle.
In 1521 he was made chief butler of England. In 1529 he was summoned by writ to the House o f Lords as 'Johannes Hussey de sleford, chivaler'.He was a signatory to the document sent f rom England begging the papal
sanction to Henry VIII's divorce from Catherine of Arragon, and was one of those at the queen s trial who gave evidence as to her previous marriage with Prince Arthur. He was appointed i n 1533 chamberlain to the illegitimized "Princess" Mary, and his allegiance to her father see ms about the same time to have begun to waver.
On the outbreak of the Lincolnshire rebellion, known as the Pilgriamage of Grace, in the autu mn of 1536, Hussey seemed to remain firm in his allegiance to the King.Lord Hussey had bee n able to bring in his tenants to fight for the king when he had been ordered to do so.He w as accused of making no effort to raise men to put down the rebellion, and the king accused h im of being a traitor when he refused to tell the names of the men behind the rebellion.H e was tried with Lord Darcy at Westminster on 15 May 1537.Cromwell offered him a pardon i f he would furnish particulars concerning the rebellion and he said he could not do so.Ther e is a difference of opinion as to where he was executed -- Sleaford or Tyburn, and as to whe ther he was hung or beheaded.
In a history of "The Earlier Tudors" by Mackie, it is related that Hussey was beheaded in Lin coln.
After John Hussey was attainted of treason and executed, his manor of Sleford, with other lan ds to the value of five thousand pounds per annum were confiscated, and barony forfeited.Hi s childred were, however, afterwards restored in parliament the 5th year of the reign of Quee n Elizabeth (1563); but neither his estates nor the title were granted to his heirs.
