Notes for Rosa Bell Jordan:
Rosa Bell Jordan, daughter of Joseph Jackson Jordan and Emma Thurman Heidle, was born in 1885 in Pike County, Georgia, the third born of eight children. The Jordan family moved to east Texas about 1886 when Rosa was still a baby along with her elder siblings Henry and May. They settled in Wood County, Texas where the family grew, and Rosa's father, J. J. Jordan, farmed. By 1900 the Jordan's lived in neighboring Camp County.
At age 15 in September 1900, Rosa married Oscar Farrar Pruett on the day before his 22nd birthday.Oscar was the son of Francis Marion Pruett and Frances Caroline Pruitt (deceased). A month later Rosa's brother Henry M. Jordan married Oscar's sister Dora Belle Pruett. And in 1908 (after Rosa's death) Rosa's sister Willie Dell Jordan married Oscar's brother Virgil Pruett.
Rosa and Oscar became parents in July 1901 when their first daughter Evelyn Mae Pruett was born. Oscar bought 77 acres of land in Camp County on September 20, 1901, and a second track of 25 and 1/4 acres on March 12, 1902. Two weeks before Christmas 1903 the young couple welcomed their second daughter Ada Dell Pruett.Tragedy soon befell the happy thriving family. In October 1904 baby Ada Dell Pruett died at the age of 10 months.
In 1905 Oscar 27, and Rosa 20, died within two months of eachother. According to Willa Jean Bailey, Rosa's granddaughter, Oscar and Rosa became ill with "Black Jaundice" a form of Malaria. They were treated with Stricknine which was the custom at the time. Willa says "Well it not only killed them both, but Mothers' (Evelyn Mae's) baby sister (Ada Dell Pruett) who was nursing."Rosa died in October and Oscar succumbed two months later in December 1905. Oscar and Rosa Pruettwere buried in Leesburg Cemetery in Camp County, Texas together with their baby Ada Dell Pruett.
Oscar and Rosa's young daughter Evelyn Mae 4, was the only survivor of the family. The Camp County Texas courts placed Evelyn in the custody of Rosa's parents Joseph J. and Emma Jordan.Ruben Pruitt (son of William Malone Pruitt and Melissia Cook) bought Oscar's farm.
Willa Jean Bailey recalls that her mother, Evelyn Mae Pruett, "missed her Mother (Rosa), talking about her often, even when she was old."
