He moved from Mississippi to Texas in 1839.He is listed in the 1840 census of Sabine County, Texas. In 1850, he was living in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and was listed in the 1850 census as being a physician. He practiced as a medical doctor, but no indication has ever been found that showed him attending a college of higher learning for medical training.During this time, a license was not required to practice as a medical doctor and it was quite common in the Western frontier areas for a man who had the initiative, the ability, and had acquired the knowledge, to set-up himself in a medical practice and be known as a physician.John Darby Windham was known as a practicing medical doctor through-out the areas of Nacogdoches County, Angelina County, Brown County, and Callahan County, Texas. He prepared his own medicines from formulas that contained herbs and plants, and other ingredients. He owned a "mad stone" and people came to him from far and near for snake bites, spider bites, skunk (pole cat) bites and the hydrophobia (mad dog) bites. This "mad stone" was placed on the bitten area by Dr. Windham and left there until the "mad stone" quit sticking.Sometimes the "mad stone" had to be left on the wound for several days.Other times the "mad stone", supposedly, worked a "cure" in a relatively short time.
John Darby Windham also was a farmer and a cattle rancher. He planted one of the first fruit orchards in Callahan County, Texas, and he also established a general store at Tecumseh, Callahan County, Texas. He kept a written daily record, off and on, from 1880 to 1892.
John Darby Windham did not fight in the War Between the States as an enlisted soldier in the regular Confederate Army.During the War Between the States, he and his brother, Thomas B. Windham, were two of the leaders of the Home Guard Patrol of Angelina County, Texas. The Home Guard Patrol was a security unit made up of a posse of a captain and several riders. The duties of this security unit were to ride out into the area and help protect the citizens. The Home Guard also enforced the conscript law. They made sure that every eligible man served in the Confederate Army. A Home Guard Patrol unit in Kansas used the name "Jayhawks" and the "Jayhawkers" name was also used for the Angelina County, Texas, Home Guard Patrol.John Darby Windham was "pro-Rebel" and as the leader of the Home Guard Patrol, he made enemies of many of the Unionist who lived in Angelina County.Anyone who was against the War was considered a Unionist. It was his involvement as a "Jayhawker" that caused John Darby Windham to abruptly leave Angelina County in 1866 after the Confederates lost the War.After the War Between the States ended, the Unionist were back in control and they were determined to hunt-down all members of the Jayhawkers. There was a gun battle on 19 May 1866, in Homer, Angelina County, Texas, between some Unionist, and a small group of Secessionists.George Gilly was the leader of the Unionist, and the Secessionists included John Darby Windham and his son, Jesse Ezekiel "Eli" Windham.Jesse Ezekiel "Eli" Windham was killed in this gun battle. It was about this time that the Windham family completed their move to Brown County, Texas. On 04 August 1868, two years after John Darby Windham hastily left Angelina County, the Sheriff, by order of the "Carpetbagger" court, sold the 177 acre homeplace of John Darby Windham at Shawnee Village, to the highest bidder.
John was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census Nacogdoches County, Texas, USA.John was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census Angelina County, Texas.John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census Brown County, Texas.John was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census Callahan County, Texas.
