In a letter written by Amanda Pipes (Mrs. W.W.Clendenin), dated January 25,
1943, we learn that "when the Civil War came on, Miss Rhoda was engaged to the
episcopal minister's son in Kirkwood (Mississippi) and Miss Teresa to Governor
Hoard's son, Winans...and no one was more popular or livelier or prittier than
the McManus girls." Rhoda's fiance was killed in the War and Teresa's fiance
died soon after the War. Teresa made her home first with the Stones and later
the McKowen family of East Feliciana. Rhoda lived with the Pipes family of East
Felicianam, and she was, according to Mrs. Clendenin, "a precious member of the
family, always busy mothering us and taking care of the endless details of the
house keeping that had to be exquisite...and reading us the serial stories the
minute the mail came in."
