Hi Susan,
As you can see, I have not included they others in this e-mail as I have received some disappointing news from Christine Fleuty. She tells me that she has part of a letter from a JP from the community where Adelaide lived, written to Mr. Godfrey, presumable Mary's husband who was trying to trace her, stating that she had eloped with the 'fellow' from the lot opposite. As you can see, there is not much information here unless somehow the records of this JP can be found. I phoned the number you gave for V H Harris and this turned out to be Victor Harris and of course he knew nothing of Joan Shortland. He did suggest we look atwww.friendsreunited.com.uk as there may be a connection there.
Bye for now. Heather and John July 25 2004

Subject: RE: New year
Happy New Year to us - every one! This may indeed prove to be an interesting year.Global warming ? perhaps that is why everyone seems to be experiencing warmer weather than usual. There is actually mud around here!
We did experience 3 days of 40+ degrees in Perth. It was ok except that the
school did not have air conditioning! Poor listless kids!I am delighted Susan, to hear of your travel plans for the year. I agree with your philosophy completely. Brian & Marcy may take their trip east this
year with Sharon working in Ontario.
When we finish this house project - travel will be Large on my list. Brian's
younger brother and his Brazillian wife plan to travel back there next year
and we would like to do that too.
My daughter tells me they are considering an offer made to her husband by
his company ABB, to go to work in Japan for a year as a software trainer.
Now if that happens for sure, I'm going to be going to see my grandchildren
and while I'm on the other side of the world I won't be able to resist
Australia will I???
As for Adelaide, my mother told me that most of Adelaide's siblings died of
TB. Canadian companies were making job offers to British young people to
come out and work. Apparently Adelaide came to work in a biscuit factory.
There was some confusion about when she was to arrive so they weren't at the
train station in Stratford to meet her. That is how she met grandfather,
William , as he was working for the railroad. She waited & waited and when
no one came he did her the favour of locking her in the station so she would
be safe over night. First thing in the morning he came to get her and
brought his sister May with him. They took her back to their boarding house.
Adelaide did work in the biscuit factory , at least for a while. Mother told
the story(as told to her by Adelaide)about her one day at lunch, when
the boss was out - up on th table dancing, being cheered on by fellow
workers. She did get caught but I don't remeber any serious consequences. It
is a fun image of our twinkling dark eyed, fun loving grandmother before
there was so much greif to tear her down. She was tiny 4' 11' so dancing on a lunch room table is feasable!
My grandfather had a cousin Tom Pacey, who apparently came to Canada first
but I did not hear of any of Adelaide's relatives being in Canada. Tom Pacey
did not have any children. The only one I know of, to return to England was May, and that was when her father died she brought their mother back to live in Stratford. I am convinced that William & Adelaide were married in Stratford ON. Can.
The only way I can think of to find any information about Hart, might be
through land records.
I have not unpacked my things yet. This house remodelling has been a slow
process. I am assembling my kitchen cabinets, while I am on school break,
and Brian is getting the drywall in the kitchen ready for paint, so progress
is being made.
Best wishes to all-June
