The origin of this Caleb Carman is currently not known, however taking a look at the naming conventions used by Caleb and his descendants would indicate a descendant of Caleb 2. Given the current identified grandchildren of Caleb2, it is my opinon that this Caleb Line is tied to Joshua, the son of Caleb2, who married Lucy Dayton. To support this hypothesis we see that Joshua2 was born circa 1665. We have also found the interesting Will abstract of John Brooks probated March 1723/4 which records Ann Brooks, admnx of his estate and mentions her husband Joshua Carman! This Joshua is probably related to our Caleb who was born in Cecil County, Maryland and evidently owned land on the Northwest River rom 1744 until his death in late 1760/early 1761. The Northwest River empties into the uppermost reaches of the Chesaspeake Bay and just east of the Mighty Susquehanna River which travels through Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York.
Caleb's birth date is also suspect. There have been several references to his birth date of 30 Aug 1711.During a visit to the Cecil County Historical Society (Located across the street from the County Courthouse in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland), it was learned that the Vestry Proceedings for Saint Mary Ann's Parish, located on the Northwest River in the said County are still owned by the church. However, they have been placed in safe-keeping of a local bank for many years. The Vestry Records were transcribed in 1891 by a Mrs. Lucy H. Harrison of Baltimore, Maryland. These transcripts are located in the County Historical Society and consist of a large ledger style book (approximately 11X14 inches) with hand entries. The top of the pages were stamped with page numbers. When looking at the transcript, it is very apparent that the records were not in chronological order. At times entries would jump, for example: from a birth in 1711 to 1733. There are a couple of possibilities that could account for the random entries. The first reason could be a poor transcription done by Miss Harrison. Second, the early Vestry Records could have already been copied due to some unforseen event such as the originals were in poor condition and were actually copied at a later date.. It would be well worth the effort to try to obtain the original Vestry Records. From the 1891 transcription we read on stamped page 281, the following: A 30 August 1711 Then was born Caleb Carman. It should be noted that no other CARMANs were noted in the Vestry Records. It has been this date of birth that has been published in various books, probably based on this transcript and not the actual church records. Another factor which casts doubt as to Caleb's birth date is the birth dates of his children. Reportedly, his son Joshua was baptised in 1759 and this would make Caleb Carman 48 years old at the time of his son's baptism. His daughters, Ann and Rachel were baptised February 8, 1760.
From the selling of his land by his wife Mary in 1774 we learn that Caleb purchased his land in 1744 along with Thomas Brooks and John Brooks, probably relations to Ann Brooks, (possibly Caleb's mother). It would be safe to assume that Caleb would have to have been of legal age to purchase the land. For supporting this hypothesis, let's say 21 years of age which could place his birth at 1723. It is my belief that Caleb was actually born about 1721 vice 1711. It is interesting that two of Caleb's children (the oldest), are named Joshua and Ann (after his parents?) Caleb stipulated in his will that his land should not be distributed to his heirs until such time as the children would be eight years of age. Since he probably died in late 1760 or early 1761, the latest year that the land could be dispersed would be 1769. Mary, his wife sold the property in 1774.
It has been inferred by previous undocumented genealogies, that Caleb married twice. It seems that this probably is so! The Will of Thomas Miller, a weaver in Cecil County, Maryland, written 11 Jan 1749 and probated 03 May 1749 names Daughter Anne Miller as the extrx. And the following was bequeathed:To daughter Martha Brooks, 10 shillings. To daughter Mary Carman, furniture I had of Caleb Carman. To my daughter Anne Miller, remainder of the estate.
Although the Will abstract stated that Thomas referred to his wife, it did not name her. The Witnesses were James Grady, John Jones, and Edward Neavil, Jr.Caleb Carman was also the surety with John Keitely on the administration of the estate of James Brooks. Andrew Ryan and his wife Martha were the administrators, 20 Jul 1752.
Caleb Carman's Will is no longer on file at the Cecil County Maryland Courthouse, the actual document is now located at the Maryland State Archives. The Will is available at the Cecil County Courthouse on microfilm. The Will is referenced in Liber BB No. 2 folio 200 dated 21 Feb 1761 with Mary C. As the Executor.
