Notes for Charles MELLOWS: Governors agree to name the New Pool after Charles Mellows No doubt many OS will be delighted to hear that Chas will now be remembered for all his work and enthusiasm in helping to set Stortford on the path to become such a well known School in the swimming world. It was he who encouraged the boys on the enormous task of digging the outdoor pool . A job that today would be done by a posse of JCBs was dug by a spade and barrow. Much of the spoil of course ending up in the Rock Gardens. This took place 75 years ago but there could still be some of that 'forced labour gang' who remember taking part. The work was started in the Winter term and finished halfway through the Spring term when the concrete arrived. On Tuesday, 22 May 1928 the water was pumped in and the pool was soon in use. There was apparently no opening ceremony, a mere half page in the Stortfordian and a note of thanks to Mr Mellows 'for the perseverance he has shown in getting this ambitious project carried out and for his help in the excavating'. It was Chas too who started the '80 Club' - did he expect that it would still be in being in 2003? How many boys - and now girls - have completed their '80 Club' and earned their silver spoon? We cannot forget that the Governors saw fit to build the indoor pool in 1896 - that indeed was a brave decision - and apart from Chas there have been many to encourage swimming over the years. Before the war Howcroft came once a week to coach and then years later Bill Clare and Duncan Newby amongst others. Each had a tremendous influence on swimming. We all hope that with the new pool a new era of excellence will result.
