Notes for William Wells:
I'd like to answer some of the recent questions asked on this forum,
starting with the question regarding William Wells' parentage. It has been
proven that he was NOT the son of the Prebendary of Norwich Cathedral. The
letter proving that the son of William Welles of Norwich never left England
was posted to this list in 1999. You can read the letter by clicking the
link below which connects to the Threaded Archives.
If that doesn't work go to the Archives for the Wells-Long-Island List and
click on April 1999. The message you want to read was from Kathryn
[WELLS-LONG-ISLAND-L] William WELLS, FF by Kathryn Allahyari
William Wells died November 13, 1671 at age 63 according to his gravestone
which is in the First Presbyterian Church's cemetery in Southold. That would
make his year of birth 1608. He married first Bridget, widow of Henry
Tuthill, and second Mary. No last name is known for Mary. It has NOT been
proven that she was a Youngs.
We have not been able to trace William's ancestry further back. We do not
know for sure when he came to Long Island. We do not know when he came to
the New World.
Regarding the questions about Orange County, NY: the best source is
Ruttenber's "History of Orange County" although it has some inaccuracies in
it with respect to lineages. Also the Coleman collection of the Presbyterian
Church records of Goshen that I mentioned earlier is a good source. There is
also a book called "Pioneer Families of Orange County, New York," compiled
by Martha & Bill Reamy that has short histories of the towns and family
groups of the people who first settled there. The Abstracts to New York
Wills that I mentioned earlier are also very helpful. These abstracts are
for all of New York, so they contain Long Island wills as well as Orange
County wills. I copied the ones I needed from Genealogy.com. The Salmon
Records, while mainly a Long Island resource, occasionally mentions Goshen
since so many sons and daughters were moving there.
I checked my Ruttenber's for James Wells in Minisink and I am afraid there
is no mention of any Wells in the section on Minisink The only name
mentioned for early Minisink was Kimber. The Wells line that the book does
outline goes from William down through Joshua, John, another John (??),
another Joshua, Joshua Jr., and finally to Alfred born in 1805. These Wells
lived in Goshen. I did not check this out to see if the names were accurate.
I'm only relating what the book said in the biography of Alfred Wells. The
book has two parts, by the way, one the history and the other biographical
sketches which include the ancestry of the subject involved. Sometimes the
two parts are bound separately; mine are bound together. If you have a good
local genealogy library, they may have copies.
Early records in Goshen and Orange County as a whole are very sparse. The
First Presbyterian Church of Goshen was expanded and a new church built at
the end of the 1800s. In doing this, the early graveyard was obliterated.
And the story is the same elsewhere in the County. Early records have been
burned or lost and gravestones moved to make way for new construction. The
Orange County Historical and Genealogical Society has a small library in
downtown Goshen which I have visited. Most of what they have is second-hand
information. Very little primary information has survived.
Sorry I can't be of more help right now, but I'll keep looking for something
on James, Jesse, or Israel Wells.

Birth: 10 FEB 1603/04 in Norwich, Norfolk, England
Birth: 10 FEB 1603/04
Death: 13 NOV 1671 in Southold, Suffolk Co., L.I., NY
Acordding to Gary W. Skarka from his site on the WorldConnect Project in Rootsweb, William was born in 1608 in England. He settled at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635. He and the following sailed on October 21, 1640 to the east end of Long Island, now Southold. They had been members of Purican churches in England and had brought their families all but Peter Hallock, a batchelor. Since Peter was the first to step ashore, the landing site was called Hallock's Landing. Saling with William and Peter were Barnabas Horton, Rev. John Youngs, John Tuthill, Richard Terry, Thomas Mapes, Matthias Corwin, Robert Ackerly, Jacob Corey, John Conklin, Isaac Arnold and John Budd.
Gary also gives William's first wife's name as Bridgit Tuthill. He records they had two daughters, Bethia and Abigail. He does not record Mehitable as a daughter with Mary Maria Young(s).
