Notes for Sarah Bancroft:
A tree that stood when our ancestors arrived:
Mighty oak's fatal blow

It stood for about 550 years and came down with a crack in the middle of the night.
Lloyd Harbor's beloved "big oak," believed to be the oldest black oak tree in North America, fell early yesterday morning, the village mayor said.
The landmark tree, which once soared at least 90 feet tall and stretched 138 feet wide, is said to have been favored by President Theodore Roosevelt. The oak's health had declined in recent years, Lloyd Harbor Mayor Lee Hairr said, and conservationists had braced it with cables and pipes.
Earlier this year, some of the tree's limbs were cut and used to craft an 8-foot-long table that sits in the village hall boardroom, Hairr said.
"You know someone has a terminal disease and they're very old and majestic and you know their time is limited but you keep hoping they'll be able to hang on," said Hairr, adding that the tree dated to 1450.
The great oak finally succumbed to the remnants of Ernesto at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday, its 7-foot-wide trunk splitting in two and its branches crashing to the ground.
Lloyd Harbor residents and visitors paid their respects yesterday at the intersection of Lloyd Harbor Road and Forrest Drive, taking photos, mementoes, or a last, quiet look. The oak stood on land owned by former Newsday publisher Raymond Jansen, who was on vacation and could not be reached for comment.
"It sounds silly, but it's like part of the family," said Gregory Gabriel, 49, of Middle Village, who has been coming to Lloyd Harbor for 20 years.
