Notes for Andy Gennings Wimmer:
The following are the remembrances of his family history, told by his grandson Thomas N. Wimmer to his Daughter Elleen Wimme Miller in April 2009
Andy was the “runt” of his family standing only about 5’10 or 11”.He was bald by about age 19 Tom remembers being told.Tom does not recall his eye color. (his brother’s all had blue eyes as near as we can tell EWM).
Andy worked as a teamster for his father's(Tom G.'s) freight company between Green River, Ut and Crescent Jct., Ut and the old Mine S. of Moab, Ut. as a young man.He also piloted his own river boatalong side his father and was on the expeditions to locate future Dam sites for the Elect Co. along the Colorado River.(Refer to Lewis Freeman's book Down the Grand Canyon)He later moved his family to Green River, Ut and worked in his father's Red Star Mill until he moved his family to Calif in the 1930's.Family legend has it that Andy's family(father) was in peril of losing "the ranch" (most likely The Ruby Ranch on the Green River in S. Utah) along witheverything else and so Andy and a brother (Charles?) went to work in the oil fields in Southern Calif. to earn enough to send back to Tom.Andy stayed in Southern Calif and raised his family there.
Andy was the first Volunteer fire Chief on the Lynwood Fire Dept.
They lived on Los Flores in Lynwood, Ca.
He and his friend Ernie Wampler along with Andy's son Ray, brought wild mustangs back from Utah to L.A.and broke them in the sand of the L.A. River bed, then sold them to the riding stables along the river.
All four kids (Ray, Dixie, Phyllis and Max) bought Emmar her first refrigerator a Servelle gas refrigerator. It collapsed the back porch wooden steps as Tom, Max and ? were trying to bring it into the house.Ray then went under the porch to check those boards and they were all rotten. So they had to reinforce the porch and poured concrete steps while the new refrigerator sat in the back yard. They chipped the new steps as they brought it up onto the porch and then they could not get it through the door.So they had to enclose the back porch and the refrigerator had to stay on the porch.
Tom remembers vividly the old “Ice box” where the ice man came by in a horse drawn wagon to deliver the Ice.The kids loved having him chip off ice in the summer and if he didn’t volunteer the kids would “steel it” anyway.
Andy kept horses on a piece of property out near Imperial Hwy and Long Beach Blvd. where the Lynwood Bowling Alley was later built.
Andy loved to go to the “Red White and Blue” bar in Lynwood, CA.which was owned by good friend Gus (Greek name - a "loan shark") a tradition that his son Ray continued.
June remembered Andy as being a very “mean man”.
Andy died of Gang green at the age of 52 or 53ish following an injury he received when hot slag went down his boot while he was welding on an oil Derrick. At first he refused to go to the doctor. When he finally gave in the doctor wanted to remove his foot. And he said “Over my dead body” and refused the surgery. When the gang green moved up his leg, they tookhis leg in progression foot, knee, then upper thigh. But by then the gang green was throughout his body. ( As told by his grandson Tom. It is Unkown whether this was over days, weeks or months).
Tom was very young but remembers one day getting into the cupboard for a game and finding Andy’s prosthetic leg. When he asked Grandma what this was she cried.Andy had already passed away by this time.He remembers being scared when he and his dad would go over to visit. He says he doesn’t remember seeing him but he remembers hearing a deep gravely voice rar rar rar… which scared him.He remembers a bald man with a spot on his head but he isn’t sure this was his granddad “Andy” although he recalls
Grandson Tom remembers using the old push mower to mow the lawn. (about age 7 or 8) His dad Ray was "on his case" to do a perfect job for Grandma, Andy had since died and Ray knew his dad always had a perfectly groomed yard.
