Thomas Gennings Wimmer Jr. (b. 12 Jun 1867, d. 22 Sep 1934)
Notes for Thomas Gennings Wimmer Jr.:
Tom was the eldest of thirteen children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Simons Wimmer
He had five children, all but one, born in Payson, Ut.He moved to Salt Lake City, in 1897 or 98 and lived for several years in the 3rd house from the corner above 6th E on 3rd St.(the address about 630 E) He went to Green River, Ut in 1900 looking for a better place to raise his sheep and soon moved his family there to live, first on what is now the Hastings ranch north of town, then into a large white wooden house on N Clark St (across from the Roy May home). He bought the Wheeler Box B ranch down the river ( in later years known as the Ruby ranch and at the time of this writing, owned by the Dunham family)
He owned Red Star Transfer and Livery Freight company until his wife died.It was said that from that time on he lost all interest in life in general. He took the horses and turned them loose to roam the desert.
He was head boatman for the U.S. Geological survey on two trips to look for Reclamation Dam sites (Boulder or Black Canyon as it was called then and Glen Canyon) He testified in Washington D.C. as to feasibility and his testimony is part of Congressional record.
Heencouraged his two daughters, Laura and Marg, to homestead at Crescent Junction during the period of 1918-1923 so that he would have a base at the railhead to haul a mill to Big Indian mine below Moab.He also had plans to build a hotel at Crescent Jct. but that never came into fruition.
Tom was an energetic, hard-working man who expected everyone else to work as hard as he did.He had some good ideas but was a lack-a-daisical business man, who trusted everyone to do what was right. He lost most of his sheep, because he co-signed a note for another man who failed to pay the debt.He lost the Ranch(Ruby) down the river because he failed to make sure all of the paperwork was filed when that note was paid.
In 1919 he used a diamond ring as collateral to obtain a loan from his son-in-law in order to buy a house in Salt Lake, located on 1st Ave and M(?) St. when it was discovered that his beloved Sev was dying. He never redeemed the ring, by paing back the "loan".
His daughter-in-law, Erma called him "fiddle-footed", an expression I had often heard but can give no explanation for. (Bobbe Wimmer Kidrick)
On September 1, 1909 Tom launched his paddle wheeled boat the "Marguerite" on the Green River. To commemorate he and his party mostly consisting of his children, wrote the date, name of the boat and their names on a cliff rock wall above the river. It has been a local Icon for many generations and in September 2009 his descendants plan a commemorative "100 year celebration/family reunion" where they plan to Raft the green river to the location and leave an ammo box hidden among the rocks containing an updated family tree and historical family stories.I hope to be among them.Elleen Wimmer Miller
