Notes for Thomas Gennings Wimmer:
Tom Wimmer, Sr. came to Utah as a young boy, with his father and mother, Robert and Lucretia Wilkerson Wimmer.Having withstood the rigors of crossing the plains, growing up in the shadow of a stern patriarcal father, a church that had no competition and a small frontier town, could have turned a lesser person into a weak, accepting, dull individual, but instead produced just the opposite. He too, grew up to be a rather stern man, but the church that proved to have a repressive effect on others was merely accepted (and at times used to his advantage and later, in the same manner, by his eldest son) by him.
Along with a brother, he started the Payson Exchange and Savings, became involved in freighting out of Nevada and was a co-owner for a short time of one of the first silver mines in the Tintic district. He and his wife were the parents of 13 Children.
The following information was taken from an article written for the Payson newspaper in 1974, along with a picture of the house mentioned in the story.
Once occupied by the family of Tom Wimmer, who was a highly successful businessman in Payson, this home is nearly 100 years old since Mr. Wimmer ordered the original adobe structure built in 1875.The home later was improved with frame siding (there is a reference to subsequent owners, here) and it became a hotel in 1942. (The house has changed hands many times since then, but is still in ixistance and in fair condition, as of 2000)
Although Indian scares were infrequent back in the late 1870's and ealy 1880's, it is said that the T.G."Tom" Wimmer family hid upstairs in a dark closet when word came that indians were near.Today that closet is a bathroom and the two story Wimmer residence, located at 144 W. Utah Ave is known as the Payson Hotel, established in 1942 by J.W."Bill" and Donna Daniels Edwards.
Tom Wimmer operated a small store in town and dealt mostly in sheep and cattle.Historic accounts note that he became one of the richest men in the community.(little of whatever he gained ever made its way down through the generations that followed, unfortunately!)
Another interesting feature on the site is an old, spread Chestnut tree standing in front of the Hotel. It was planted in 1879, four years after the Wimmers had the house built. The late Henry Badham, and early Payson pioneer, once recalled the Chestnut was a mere "stick" nearly a century ago.Today the towering tree provides dense shade in summer and chestnuts in autumn for the neighborhood youngsters to gather.
(The following is taken in part from the Biographical Record of Salt Lake City and Vicinity, Nat'l Historical Record Co., Chicago (1902) and as are most of these types of discourses, present only the best and positive side of any picture. The reader can take it as he/she may want.Due to a lack of space and time only the highlights are presentedhere).
Thomas G. Wimmer is without a doubt the owner of one of the finest ranches to be found in the entire state of Utah, located on Bear River, in Rich county and near the town of Woodruff. This ranch was located manyyears ago by a wealthy firm of stockmen living in Evanston, Wyo and upon the deaths of two members of the firm the property came into the hand of Mr. Wimmer, who has turned it into a sheep ranch, and there ranges his large herds of sheep.
Our subject received his education from the common schools of Utah and started out for himself at the age of 18 years, beginning in a small way int eh stock business, which he has followed up to the present time.Making that his principal industry, although he has been identified to a large extent with many other enterprises in the State. He has made a specialty of raisingfine sheep and blooded stock, raising short horn cattle and also some fine horses.
The Wimmer family is one that has been largely connected with the life and history of this western country.
Any writing in parentheses are of my personal doing, as a matter of explanation for the most part.Unfortunately, as mentioned before, there are never any "warts", and therefore, not nearly as much fun as they could be. (by Bobbe Wimmer Kidrick)
