Notes for Anna Katharina Stahl:
The following is from Else Christen's notes written in 1985.
" Great grandmother Truppel came from Steinwerder,an island in the Elbe, some distance downriver from Hamburg. My mother told methat she was a tall, dark haired woman. And her people were strong ,rugged, and serious, not inclined to smalltalk. the men earned their living by fishing out on the North Sea.They were often away for weeks at a time cruising their fishing boats for herring runs. And the women were used to waiting and prayingfor their men.It was hard, and ,for the men,a dangerous life. the North Sea is one of the most turbulent and dangerous bodies of water, due to it's relative shallowness. And,perhaps, for that reason,it was abundant with fish.

Great Grandmother Truppel didn't get old. She died in her early forties, when her youngest child Max was about nine years old. My GRANDmother, the next youngest, was seventeen. There were two other children Klara, ninteen, and Karl in his early twenties. She was ill for a long time with what Uncle karl called a blood disease. No one seemed to know anything more specific. It was the turn of the century. She died in 1902.Grandfather soon remarrieda widow who had one daughter who was already married."
