38.LESTER SANDFORD5 MOEN (LOUIS LARSON4, LARS EVENSON3, EVEN LARSON HIGDEM2KVERNHUSMOEN, MARI1HALVORSDATTER) was born May 28, 1907 in Deep, North Dakota, and died April 25, 1989 in Flagstaff, Arizona. He married CLARICE LUELLA KONGSLIE August 27, 1933 in Upham, North Dakota, daughter of THORVOLD KONGSLIE and ANNA SKAADEN.
Notes for LESTER SANDFORD MOEN:
Lester was born on Louis and Severinas homestead farm about 1 mile southeast of a little town called Deep. Lester was the second child and was born in a little house which what was later the blacksmith shop. In 1909 his parents decided to move to the Red River valley to live on their grandfathers farm, so they leased their farm to Gust Fenner. After spending a few years in the valley they wanted to get back to the prarie so they returned with two more children, Myrtle and Edwin. The farm was still under lease so they took a trip to Oregon by train to visit Louis's relatives, came back and then lived on the Joren place until the lease was up. Louis worked at the Brown store in Deep.
Louis died when Lester was 14 when Lester was in the eight grade in Deep school. Lester quit school to help his mom with the farming and, with a little help from his uncle Evan, was soon the man running the farm. Louis had bought a threshing rig with his uncle Arne so it wasnt long until Lester was threshing for himself and others.
At 21 Lester wanted to get started with sheep so he and his cousin Ruben borrowed $700 from the Kramer bank, bought 200 sheep, hauled them by train and ferry 150 miles home to Kramer. He raised sheep for about 5 years before getting married to Clarice. Lester farmed several sections of land during the drought years of the late 20's and early 30's barely making ends meet. He worked at several other jobs including digging water wells to make ends meet.
When he and Clarice began making serious plans he stated in the only letter he ever wrote to Clarice,"I am mortgaged to the hilt and have no money". They saw silent movies go into "talkies", the first talkie they saw was "Whoopie"with Eddie Cantor and the second was "Wheeler and Wolseuy".
Their first home was on the Jevne place. Fourteen months later they had their first child, Juanita. Their family life led them to several farm residences during their time in the Upham area and of course seven of their children. The eight child, Layne was born after they moved to Minot in 1953.
Lester began working as a carpenter in about 1943 when his sons Tillman and David were old enough to take care of the farm. He did odd jobs to major jobs including remodeling a school house to building and home on the xxxx farm.
The family move to Arizona in 1960 and lived on the Indian reservationwhere Lester worked on the Glenn Canyon dam and later on Navajo Indian school construction before he retired.Lester passed away in 1989 at the age of 80.
Notes for CLARICE LUELLA KONGSLIE:
Clarice was born on the T. T. Kongslie farm in a little house on her moms homestead which is about 1 mile northwest of Upham. All her brothers were born there except Alfred, who was born in the new house built in 1916.She was the fourth child following three boys. It was a stormy winter night and her mother Anna and a hired girl had earlier washed clothes, hung them out to dry and then brought them in frozen to be dried inside the house. When the time came Thorvald hooked up the horses to the sleigh and brought the midwife, Mrs Bisberg, over for the delivery. The first, and only girl, was celebrated. Clarice, on many early occasions, imagined she had a older sister, Luella, who lived in Minneapolis, desiring not to be the only girl amongst five boys.
Clarice completed her entire education in Upham where she graduated from high school in 1929?.
Clarice and Lester were married on a Sunday afternoon in the Kongslie living room after a three year courtship. Lesters sister Myrtle and Clarices brother Arthur were the witnesses. Clarice had made herself a handkerchief out of a piece of her mothers wedding dress. Anna made a lunch of potato salad, sandwiches and a simple cake.
Their first home was on the Jevne place. Fourteen months later they had their first child, Juanita. Their family life led them to several farm residences during their time in the Upham area and of course seven of their children. The eight child, Layne was born after they moved to Minot in 1953.
Clarice worked at several jobs when conditions permitted from early telephone operator in Upham until later in Minot when she worked as a cashier in a grocery store.
The family move to Arizona in 1960 and lived on the Indian reservationwhere Lester worked on the Glenn Canyon dam and later on Navajo Indian school construction before Lester retired. Both of Clarices parents passed away while spending their final days at Lester and Clarices home.Lester passed away in 1989. Clarice still resides today in their home in Flagstaff where she has lived since 1969.
