Sunday Brings Drowning
For Local Youths
-----
Double Tragedy Without Witnesses
Snuffs out Lives; Bodies Recovered
In Evening
James Trotter, 18, and Harold Whipple, 15, Caldwell youths, drowned Sunday afternoon in the Boise river. The tragedy occurred about 2 o'clock.Shortly before 8 p.m. Peter and Sam Kim, called from the Caldwell swimming pool, pulled the bodies from the river.Efforts at resuscitation failed and Dr. F.M. Cole, upon his arrival, pronounced both boys dead.No inquest will be held, it was said Monday.
The pool in which the boys were drowned is about a quarter of a mile up the river from Curtis Park.According to Peter Kim, the water there is quiet and nowhere is the pool more than seven feet deep. This depth is maintained only in a small spot directly beneath the diving board.Surprised is expressed that the youths, neither of whom is said to have been a competent swimmer, did not work their way out of this deep spot.
Boys' Clothes Found
The boys' clothes were found about 20 yards up the river from the diving board.Apparently they had undressed and worked their way downstream toward the diving board.Reconstruction of the tragedy from the point is impossible, although one theory holds that Whipple, diving into the river, sustained injuries to his head when he struck rocks in the river bottom and that Trotter went to his rescue. The latter suffered with chronic heart trouble and Dr. D. E. Baird, his physician, says that any shock might have caused cessation of heart action.
About 3 o'clock, Charles Painter and Paul Fink went in swimming in the same pool. One of these boys actually contacted one of the bodies in the water, and thinking it was a snake, left the pool.Neither returned to the water.
Bodies Submerged
Bodies of both boys were still submerged when they were recovered in the evening although they gave evidence of rising to the surface, according to Peter Kim.With the help of some other swimmers from the Caldwell pool, a systematic search of the river was inaugurated under Kim's direction and the bodies were quickly recovered.Previous searching efforts had been confined to the edge of the stream and pool. The bodies had moved down stream only a few feet from the end of the diving board. The bodies were close together.
The boys left the Trotter home shortly after dinner to drive to the river. They said they were going swimming and that they would return in half an hour. The parents did not feel anxious over the boys' failure to return until late in the afternoon.Walking down the river, they found the car parked half a mile below the house and a little ways apart the boys' clothing heaped on the ground.
Although they did not see the youths, the parents supposed they were farther down stream where other people were bathing.
Search Begun
Several hours passed and the boys failed to return.A search was inaugurated in which many volunteers took part.
Whipple is survived only by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Whipple, who reside in Caldwell.Trotter is survived by his mother, Mrs. Adella Trotter, who lives on the Middleton road about four miles northeast of Caldwell, three sisters, Virginia of Caldwell, Pearl, a married sister living in California, and Mrs. Sam Whipple of Caldwell, and a brother, Roscoe of Boise.
Trotter was a brother to Loren M. Trotter, who lost his life during the World War and in whose honor the American Legion post of Caldwell was named.

CENTRAL COVE
GIRL SUICIDES
------
Miss Edith Paxton
Takes Life in
Despondency
------
Edith Paxton, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, George Paxton of Central Cove, took her own life at her parents' home Friday morning, as the climax to a despondent mood in which the girl had been for some time, Coroner William E. Talley of Nampa reported here.
Miss Paxton died about one hour after placing a 12 guage shotgun against the left side of her chest and discharging the weapon by leaning over it as it rested on the floor. The charge entered just to the left of the center of the chest, and due to the girl's leaning position, made a downward course, exiting under the left arm about two inches lower than it entered.
Parents of the girl told Coroner Talley and Chief Deputy Sheriff Andy Moline, who investigated, that Edith had been despondent for some time and had persistently refused to confide her troubles to either her mother or father.
The shot was fired about 7:30 a.m. Friday while other members of the family were attending to farm chores, the parents stated.Coroner Talley said the gun had been kept loaded in a closet.
He said the girl had taken the weapon into a bedroom, in which were two beds.In one of the beds Edith's five-year-old cousin, a girl, was sleeping.
Discharge Wakes Cousin
Discharge of the shotgun woke the small girl, who said she heard Edith cry out at the same time. The little child found Edith lying on the floor, and she ran outside the house to call for help.
The girl's father was the first one to enter the room, and he told the coroner that Edith was laying on her back, the gun beneath her.Dr. F.M. Cole was called, and he arrived before the girl died.
By the time Mr. Talley and Mr. Moline arrived, the girl had been removed to the Case funeral home, where funeral announcements will be made later.
Coroner Talley said it was purely a case of suicide and that there will be no inquest. The girl had attended high school for two years.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Paxton, and by seven sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Mary Hammer of Caldwell, Mrs. Autumn Rippey of Parma, Mrs. Harry West of Priest River, Mrs. Charlotte Friar of Caldwell, Mrs. Gladys Curry of Nyssa, Ore., Mrs. Lois Wilson of Caldwell, Miss May Paxton of Wilder, George, Robert, and Ben, who reside with their parents.

DIED-At St. Paul, Minnesota, May 16, 1887, Mrs. J.H. Lander, nee Nannie E. Newland, aged 20 years.
Mrs. Lander was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.R.T. Newland, of this place. She was born in this valley, near where Caldwell now stands, on the 20th day of April, 1867, and has always lived here until her marriage. Her bright disposition and loving ways soon made her a general favorite with all whom she met, and her sweet and earnest life more than endeared her to the hearts of her friends. On the 25th day of August, 1885, she was married to Mr. J.H. Lander, who took her to his home at St. Paul, Minnesota. Her many friends were loth to part with her then--a happy bride. How different the second parting! The remains were brought to Caldwell for burial, arriving her Friday morning. The funeral took place at the church at 10 o'clock a.m. the same day, conducted by Rev. Dwight Spencer, of Salt Lake.Nothing could so forcibly tell of the high esteem and love of this community for pretty Nannie Newland, as the large number of sorrowing friends that paid their last respects to the dead at the funeral. She was buried in the Caldwell cemetery.
Her mother was summoned to St. Paul by her illness and was with her during the last hours. Her death was a very severe blow to her parents, and they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this the hour of their affliction.

Mrs. Cora Shafer of Notus and

Nyssa Saturday
---
An entire Notus family, with the exception of the father, was wiped out Saturday afternoon when Mrs. Cora Shafer, 29, and her six children were pinned beneath their automobile, which oberturned into the waters of the Owyhee canal 15 miles from Nyssa, and were drowned.
The family have been residents of Notus since 1929.The father, Conrad Shafer, was in the Veterans' hospital in Boise, having been admitted February 2 for a minor operation.
Car Leaves Road
The mother, with her children, was enroute to visit Mrs. Shafer's mother, Mrs. Oscar J. Pinkston, who lives near Mitchell butte.Mrs. Shafer was within a quarter of a mile of her mother's place, when the car swerved from the road and toppled over the steep banks of the canal, landing upside down in three feet of water. The car was an open touring car and the frail top collapsed, pinning the seven persons beneath it.
Besides the mother, victims were Jack, 11; Charles, 9; Robert, 7; Wanda, 6; Jimmy, 3; and Lawrence 4 months.
County Officers Called
Orin Sleeper, who was working on the Pinkston ranch, saw the car leave the road and disappear. He went to the scene and saw the upright wheels of the car protruding from the water and the children's caps floating on the surface.
County Coroner R.O. Payne, Dr. J.J. Sarazin, Nyssa, and state traffic officers were called to the scene. The car was righted and the bodies recovered, although some difficulty was experienced in finding the bodies of Mrs. Shafer and Jimmy. The bodies were taken to the Nyssa funeral home.No inquest will be conducted, Coroner Payne announced.
Funeral Arrangements Made
Mr. Shafer left the hospital in Boise Sunday to make arrangments for the funeral, which will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian church in Caldwell.
Mrs. Shafer's sister is ecpected to arrive in Caldwell from Norfolk, Neb., Tuesday.
Mrs. Pinkston, when informed of the death of her daughter and grandchildren, suffered a severe nosebleed. Those with her were unable to stop the hemorrhage and a doctor was summoned. The doctor reported that, had she not had the hemorrhage, she would have suffered a stroke of paralysis in a short time.

Clara, Eldest Daughter of Mr. And Mrs. T.W. Boone,
Suddenly Expires
Last Sunday, 7th inst., at 1:30 o’clock p.m., all that was earthly of Clara Boone, eldest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. T.W. Boone of this city, quietly passed behind the portals which guard the entrance to that mysterious hereafter.Death ruthlessly entered the confines of a happy fireside and tore from its sacred precincts one of its most beautiful and lovely inmates. The Arch-Destroyer has fastened his cold and relentless grip and the beautiful girl, just developing into noble womanhood, has been stricken down and gone forth to solve the mysteries of that great unknown. To her the storms and calms, the struggles and disappointments of this life is no more. Her fair, young spirit has divined the mystery of human existence and her untimely death leaves behind the greatest sorrow the living ever knew.God, in His wisdom, has thought best to call her home, and who shall doubt his infinite mercy and judgment. When the eyelids of our beloved ones close in death, hope springs into us and a something whispers, "this is not all:the end is not yet," and fancy pictures a glorious meeting where there is naught but truth and happiness, and misery and disappointment have no place. The heart bleeds at parting, and in our grief we cry out against the decree, but in the shadow of our deepest sorrows a ray of sunlight penetrates from out the gathered clouds and illuminates a pleasing vision of future life and eternity. To the father and mother and brothers and sisters may come a rebel thought, but who shall question the divine grace and judgment of "Him who knoweth all."His laws are universal and unvarying, and are alike to all, and we can only bow our heads in meek submission and exclaim, "Thy will be done."
The fair and beautiful girl was just ripening into lovely womanhood, and life was given up just as she began to take up its serious responsibilities.Clara was a most estimable girl and by her charm of manner and sympathetic disposition had endeared herself to all with whom she met.Our sympathy goes out to the father and mother, brothers and sisters in their great affliction, but their consolation can only be found in that blessed hope which whispers of immortality.
The funeral occured [sic] Tuesday at 2 o’clock from the Presbyterian church and the remains were followed to their final resting place by the stricken relatives and a large concourse of friends.Rev. W.J. Boone conducted the services.

Reed have been having a serious time of it lately.A little girl died of typhoid fever, a son was not expected to live, while other members of the family were stricken, with more or less severity, by the same dreadful disease. The little girl was buried last Monday, Rev. Newman conducting the funeral. At last accounts the sick folks were some better. The people of Caldwell have shown their sympathy both by untiring nursing and financial aid.

April 24, 1914:
Msr. Delburn Johnson [sic], daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Huston Frost of this city, died Tuesday noon very suddenly.Mrs. Johnson lived near Emmett and was brought to the hospital Saturday with her week-old baby after suffering a hemorrhage of the brain. She was apparently getting along nicely and had just finished eating her dinner when the end came. She was joking about a splendid bouquet o Lillies of the Valley that was on the stand, when she suddenly threw up her hands and exclaimed, "Oh, my!" drew two breaths and laid at rest. The end was caused by a second hemorrhage. The baby is a tiny mite weighing only two pounds but seems normal in every respect and is thriving finely.

THE KIND AND LOVING HUSBAND
OF AMELIA E. WRIGHT
Page 5, February 25, 1905:
Tennyson Wright was shot and killed by Fred White at Goff, Wednesday.Immediately after the killing White went to Squaw Creek and committed suicide. The tragedy was the climax to a number of quarrels over the possession of land.On a former occasion White shot at Wright.Dr. J.B. Wright, father of the young man, received word of the tragedy from Meadows by telephone and has sent a messenger to Goff to bring the remains to Caldwell.According to information received by Dr. Wright, Tennyson was on his way to Grangeville and met White, who was also going to the same place to attend the trial of the latter for an assault upon the deceased last May.A quarrel arose in which Tennyson was killed.
Tennyson Wright is well known in Caldwell and was a very popular man.He had an eviable reputation. The people of Caldwell were shocked when they heard of the murder.

Louis Francis, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. The remains were laid away in the Canyon Hill cemetery, Rev. F.E. Dark of the Baptist church officiating. The father of the babe is an operator for the O.S.L. at Ontario.Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the sorrowing parents.
