Family tradition says Thomas Morton was a soldier in the Revolution under General Francis Marion of South Carolina. Thomas Morton was the son of Alexander Morton and Thomas also had a son named Alexander. At the time of the Revolution he lived in Chester County, S.C., where he was in 1789 made an elder in the Rocky Creek Congregation of Scotch Covenanter Presbyterians. Two years later John Kell also was made an elder. John Kell's wife was Jane Morton. The close association of John Kell and Thomas Morton for many years in S.C. might have been caused partly by a relationship between John Kell's wife and Thomas Morton, but there is no proof. | |
