I started my Mosby family research with information I received from Lyle Carpenter of Fridley, MN. He had researched Wade B. Mosby and Mary E. Carpenter and provided me a descendant outline on the Mosby side. That, along with information I acquired since the 1980's. Which included the John Harris Mosby's family bible records from 1765 provided to me by Jesse Vaughan from Texas. These were the important keys for beginning my Edward "Edd" Mosby Family Tree. Another recent resource was Harry Alonzo Mosby Jr. of Liberty, MO. His web site was a great resource for dates and family history. There is a link to his web page at the bottom of this page. I also relied on my Montana family. I have hit the 2,000 individuals limit and have additional information on the Hezekiah and Elizabeth Cox Mosby branch of the family. Mainly the additional information pertains to the Armistead, Cooper and Valentine descendants. I appreciate all the assistance and information I've received from all the individuals above. The book on this page, has family Register Report, Descendant Outline, Descendant Tree, Family Timeline, Scrapbook pictures, John Harris Mosby (1765) family bible records and a component breakdown on the Coat of Arms. Spelling variations of the Mosby family nameinclude: Moorsby, Morrisby, Moresby (Edward's family name before changing it when he immigrated), Moriceby and others. First found in Cumbria, where they were seated from ancient times. Suggested readings for the name Mosby Our noble heritage: The Mosby Family History by James H. Mosby By no means is this Mosby family information complete or 100% correct. If you have any comments, corrections, questions about or information for my Mosby family tree, please feel free to contact me. Thanks again and I hope to hear from you. Mike

Wales is named as the probable birthplace of the original Moris or Maurice who gave his name to the manor Moresby. It seens when Edd Mosby the emigrant for some reason changed the spelling to Mosby. Apparently when he left England it was spelled Moresby, as some who went to the South Pacific and Australia as due to the naming of Port Moresby , New Guinea.Norway origin:The name Mosby is Norwegian in origin. It was given to one who came from Mosby, the name of several places in Norway. Mosby means "place where malt is crushed."When you read the History of England, you learn that at the beginning of the first millennium, the island of England was populated by monks in monasteries, and the Vikings from Denmark and Norway thought nothing wrong with invading England very often because they thought it was great and easy to serve themselves with all the gold and silver hidden in those monasteries with no army. This could explain why Mosby became an English name, very early on. The Vikings or Normans (=Normandy) were very strong, and went all over Europe, by estuaries (Seine, Volga, Thames). - Mosby, MT - named for William Henry Mosby (30 KB)
Traveling east on MT 200, pulling into the old Mosby Post Office. About a half-mile after crossing the Musselshell River. Mosby, Montana was named after William Henry Mosby. A Post Office was set up at the Mosby residence and was known as Baldwin, with Mary Ellen as the first Postmaster. But, the Mosby family moved down the river with the Post Office again being set up in the Mosby home, with the name "Mosby" being chosen by the U.S. Post Office Department.
