I have a book about Va.ancestry that has this small article.
Sowerby-Sorsby of Surry
Sowerby is a monor in the Hundred of Amournderness in Lancaster, England. The Sowerbys were holding part of this manor 1284 but seem to have been later dispossessed by the Butlers. The arms of the Sowerbys were "Barry of six, sa, and gu on a cheveron between 3 lions rampant, as , or " There was once a family of Sowersbys long seated at Dalston Hall in Cumberland.
Francis Sowerby was one of three brothers who were resident in Surry Co, during the 17th century. The eldest of the three was James Sowerby, who first appears in the Surry records Sept. 5, 1652 (book 1, pg 16).He was born in 1611 (book 2, pg. 127) and died 1678 or 1679 leaving a wife Ann and daughter Margaret. The two other brothers were much younger than James.
Thomas was born 1632-1634.
Francis Sowerby was probably the youngest of the three brothers and the only one who left male heirs. He first appears in the reocrds Dec. 28, 1659 (book 1 p. 145) and died in 1678-1679.mentions his wife Katherine, son Francis, "all my sons" daughters Sarah and Elizabeth, brothers Thomas and James Sowerby, and Jane Rix. The wido, Katherine Sowerby was married by May 6 1679 on which date her second husband, John Vinson.
Katherine died in Surry in 1705, her will being dated Mar. 26, 1704/5 and probated Nov. 6 1705. It makes bequests to Thomas Rose son of Richard Rose, to her daughter Elizabeth Rose, her granddaughter Ann Rose, to thomas Sowerby, to her godson Charles Reeks, to Elizabeth Jarrard and Elias Osborne, and the remainder of her estate of Francis and Katherine Sowerby.
