Notes
David A. Niles was born in Montpelier, VT on June 25, 1926 when his parents lived at 20 Liberty Street. His father worked as an insurance clerk at National Life Insurance Company. In 1932, the family moved to the corner of Heaton and Liberty Streets, in a house with a garage and large barn, and a very big front porch. Here at 62 Liberty Street were some very happy years during David's elementary and high school years. In 1944, he graduated from Montpelier High School and enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the USS Towner AKA-77, an amphibious cargo attack ship, for two years, and was finally discharged with the rate of Quartermaster Third Class. The following year was spent as a student at Vermont Junior College in Montpelier. In August 1947, he was married to Natalie Keyser of Chelsea, VT, and entered the sophomore class at Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, from which he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration.
After a career in Boston as an illustrator with a graphic arts studio, he joined the faculty at Rhode Island School of Design, where in 1980 he became a full-time professor in the Department of Illustration. In 1989 he was awarded the John R. Frazier Award For Excellence In Teaching, RISD's highest faculty honor.
He finally retired from full-time faculty with the grade of Associate Professor in July, 1995. He returned for one semester in the Spring 1996 to teach his course in Professional Practice, upon completion of which he retired permanently from teaching.
In April, 1996, he entered the cyberworld as an Email junkie. He quickly made connections to a Web Page, "A World of Pictures", administered by a Mrs. Kimberly Dahl, of Los Angeles, California.
