Cord Foote, also known as "Little Foote," "Footy" and "Cordie," joined Company F, 10th Michigan Infantry as a musician (drummer boy) on January 16, 1862, a week after his 13th birthday.He served in the Civil War until his three-year enlistment ended on February 1865.He was not allowed to reenlist for veteran service because he was too small.Disappointed he returned to his home in Flint, Michigan.His wartime experiences were recorded in "With Sherman to the Sea - Drummer's Story of the Civil War" as related by Corydon Edward Foote to Olive Deane Hormel, published in 1960.
When the 10th Michigan arrived at Jackson, Michigan in late July 1865 to be mustered out.Cordie and his drum mentor, Lacey traveled from Flint to Jackson on foot to visit their comrades.Cordie and Lacey, with drum and fife playing "Yankee Doodle" greeted the 10th the night before it was paid off and the men returned to their homes.June 7, 1883, Cord Foote became a charter member of Gov. Henry Crapo Post 145, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).Cord was transferred to the Michigan at Large Post, GAR in April 1937, after he became the last living member of the Crapo Post.He was the last living Civil War veteran from from Genesee County.
Cord offered himself as apprentice at the local tin ship in Flint in Spring 1865, right after President Lincoln was assassinated.He later owned a tin shop in Flint.Later still, Corydon Foote was a salesman for roofing materials.He served two or more terms as Alderman of Second Ward, Flint.
As a hobby, Cord caught and stuffed birds.He began this activity before his enlistment in the Civil War and while serving sent birds he discovered in his march south to his parents.As the years passed, Cord Foote's bird collection became quite celebrated.It was on display in the Genesee County Courthouse for many years and was ultimately donated to a local museum.
Cord Foote died on January 10, 1944 in Flint after a party to celebrate his 95th birthday.
