| John Aaron Olivas PO Box 3459 (407A Conelly Dr., Base Housing) Hawthorne,NV 89415 (702) 945-1026 Fax: (702) 945-5633 | Searching for Armijo, Autobee (Ortibi/Ortibiz), Barela (Varela), Davis, Duran, Rael (Riel), Romero, Segura, Sierra, Vialpando (Pando) and Vigil.Many arrived with Onate during the Conquest of New Mexico in the summer of 1598 and intermarried with the Pueblos, settling mostly in and around Santa Fe.Some arrived after the Puebo Uprising (1680-1693) with Vargas during the Re-Conquest.From Santa Fe they migrated northward and settled the area between the Continental Divide and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains; in Chama (NM), Tierra Arrarilla, Abiquiu, Santa Cruz, Espanola, Chimayo, Nambe, Truchas, Penasco, Picuris, Taos, Arroyo Hondo, San Cristobal, Quemado, Questa (Rio Colorado), Cerro, Ojo Sarco and Costilla to name a few.In the early 1800's their children began a migration into what was then the northern frontier of New Mexico, and is now southern Colorado.They settled in what is now Costilla, Huerfano and Pueblo County.I was born and raised in Pueblo County where the majority of my "known" family still lives.This past year I visited with family who still live in Questa and Truchas, NM.Charles (Carlos) Autobee (Ortibi/Ortibiz) was a French-Indian trapper/trader born in 1812 to Francois (Autobee - spelling ?) and Sarah Tate (Tayta ?) in St. Louis, MO.Charles lived/worked in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico between 1825 and 1853, finally settling in Pueblo County.In the early 1870's, Charles' son John left his wife and children in Colorado and followed his mother to Oklahoma who had rejoined her people, the Southern Cheyenne.Charles had a younger half brother, Tom Tobin, who was also born in St. Louis. |
