SHOOT OUT AT CHURCH ON GLASSY MOUNTAIN
"On Sunday last a shooting affray was held at Mountain Hill church in Glassy Mountain Township, greatly to the discomfort of the members of the church worshipping there, in which Massena Howard was instantly killed.Joshua Howard mortally wounded and Babe Durham and a brother of Babe's wounded severely, but it is thought not dangerously.
"We learn that Mr. Richard Gosnell was going from his buggy to the church with a bottle of wine in his hand for the purpose of using it in the Communion Service in the house.Joshua Howard, who was on the outside in front of the church, said to Mr. Gosnell, 'Do you mean to slight me and mean that as an insult?'Mr. Gosnell made no reply and as he went in the house, Joshua Howard shot at him.This was the signal for a general row and the Howards and their friends and Durhams and their friends began shooting at each other.Between forty and fifty shots were fired, with the results above stated.
"Joshua Howard formerly worked for the Durhams and had always been one of the party.Massena Howard is a brother of Joshua.There is a bench warrant here and a sealed sentence for Joshua Howard for carrying concealed weapons.He is also wanted in North Carolina, where he recently broke jail in which he was confined for rioting.
"Babe Durham is the young man who recently so outrageously beat Miss Gosnell on Sunday at the same church.This case has since been settled.Miss Gosnell was a daughter of Mr. Richard Gosnell.
"Trial Justice W.B. Goodwin went there to hold an inquest on Monday morning.Deputy Sheriff Jeff Gilreath left also for the scene to assist in making any necessary arrests."
"We learn since, that Massena Howard lived a few minutes only after he was shot in the bowels.
"Joshua Howard was shot in the back, and died on Monday at 1 o'clock.
"Tom Howard was shot in the head, slightly wounding him.
"Dick Howard was shot in one arm and slightly wounded.
"Luther Durham was shot in the bowels, and slightly wounded; also in his mouth dangerously; his tongue was shot in two.
"Sherman Bridgeman was shot in the head and slightly wounded.
"Luther Durham attempted to arrest Joshua Howard for disturbing public worship.They had a row on Saturday and on Sunday met to settle the difficulty.A good deal of whiskey was afloat.When Durham attempted to arrest Joshua Howard, the latter resisted and commenced firing, and Durham returned fire, with the results as above stated.
"At the inquest, on Monday, as is stated there was a large crowd of persons there, and friends of the Durhams were armed and stated that they would resist any attempt to be arrested, or allow any of their party to be arrested." (E and M, Aug. 26, 1891)
